Ethics and Value paper The definition of values defined by dictionary.com is “beliefs of a person or social group in which they have an emotional investment; (either for or against something). An example is “that person has very conservative values”. The definition of ethics defined by dictionary.com is a theory or a system of moral values. An example is “an ethic of services is at war with a craving for gain.” Professional values and ethics could mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Over the course of this paper we, as a group, will explain what professional values and ethics mean to us. We all come different backgrounds, training, and experiences but the one thing we all agreed on professional values and ethics simply comes down to one thing, doing the right thing no matter what. A concept that seems so simple on the surface but is extremely complex. One source of professional values and ethics is in the retail environment. In the retail industry an owner or manager places the business as a value. For a business to succeed, the business must have values. Those rules are the values a manager places on the employees. For example of some values that some managers have are punctuality, cleanliness, and accuracy. An employee who always arrives late doesn’t hold his employment with much value. A retail store should always be clean and organized. What kind of impression would you have if you walk into a furniture store and see dust all over the sofa’s and coffee tables' Accuracy on the order form or change from the cash register is crucial for the bookkeeping of a business. Ethics in business is about what is right and wrong. If an employee does something to cause harm to another for their personal benefit, I believe that is not ethical. That could be a salesperson lying to a customer or an employee always giving excuses for things he forgot to do. An additional source of professional values would be identified in the field of public law enforcement. It has been long referred to as the ‘golden rule’; simply treating others as you yourself would want to be treated. That would be the easiest way for all public law enforcement officers to keep everyone’s professional values fair and balanced. Another issue that could occur with public law enforcement officers and ethics is not taking advantage of the position. Though most people would people would not consider a free Slurpee from 7-11 on a hot summer day unethical, the officer must ask him or herself “Am I only receiving a discount due to my position of a law enforcement officer'” This, in turn, could create a whole new series of questions about ethics for said officer; what if he/she stops the clerk for speeding' Would the clerk expect a warning just because of the previously mentioned Slurpee' That is why it is my belief to avoid the situation all together and do the ethical thing and treat everyone the same. The way a person feels about professional values and ethics can say a lot about that person’s character. A person’s whole career and changed based solely on their values and ethics beliefs, both in a positive and negative way. An example would be someone who just always works hard, does what is right even when his or her boss isn’t looking. Through hard work, determination, and perseverance the person would get a promotion. Though it seems very easy to do there are benefits to being unethical that lure people to do it. The unethical way is probably faster or perhaps could make someone more money but it isn’t the right thing to do. A perfect example of this would be Bernie Madoff who used his knowledge of the stock market to turn people’s lifesavings into a ‘Ponzi Scheme’. That is the definition of someone who has no professional value and is unethical. The values in the construction industry differ from trade to trade. The values that I hold true to my trade are treating every man with respect treat every man equal and fair.Watching your brother ironworkers back pointing out dangers. Checking on apprentices assuring there safety. Supplying water to the men on the job and keeping them hydrated. Doing the job correctly the first time and last but not least we all go in together we all come out together. The work ethics of an ironworker can be defined as doing the job to engineer specifications. Ironworkers build high-rises bridges and pedestrian overpasses ex... .These structures will be used by hundreds if not thousands of people long after the job is done. Having good work ethic for example is to build the structure to proper code and specifications. One example of poor work ethics is a hi-rise project on the strip just west of Harmon ave. Construction crews left out key components of the infrastructure. Inspectors found these flaws and shut the job down. This tower was initially designed to surpass 50 floors. The problem was so severe that engineers had to go back and redesign the tower resulting in a tower that stands half of what it was initially designed for. This led to countless lawsuits loss of time and money not to mention jobs. When you compromise your work ethic on the steel you can compromise more than your values you compromise human life... In conclusion, it is our opinion that even though everyone’s belief on what professional value and ethics is the more we stick to the core value the more success we will achieve. We will all use each other’s experiences and beliefs about professional value and ethics to further our career. References Dictionary.com. 2011 Retrieved on May 24, 2011
