V for Vendetta and 1984 have a lot in common. V for vendetta is about a government who has a leader that controls everything from the Media to what the people could eat. “V” one of the main characters tries to destroy the government. The book 1984 deals with a man realizing that his government is not what it seems, they control every thought they make, and watch them day and night. Simple things like chocolate are banned. Love is out of the question, and illegal. “Big Brother” controls what they watch and listen to, what they read and even the cartoons that children are supposed to watch. In V for Vendetta, “Evey” realized that her government was brainwashing the whole country, by meeting V she makes her decision of doing something about it. Little details of 1984 were added to V for Vendetta, like the posters that were in every corner, special police and different branches that controlled people’s everyday life. In V for Vendetta they also had a speaker who told them and kept them informed about certain things that people did against the government. Big Brother and Ingsoc have the entire community wrapped around their fingers. Big Brother has full control over everyone. This scares the citizens into a state of allowance. They don't question anything Big Brother says because they know he will have them killed. The Party forces their hand on every aspect of life. They change history by deleting and changing text in newspapers, magazines, and books. Not only does the Party control the past they are trying to prevent the future by developing a new language called Newspeak. Newspeak is an attempt to prevent political rebellion by destroying every word related to it. Not only does the Party have complete control over text, they also control the citizens' thoughts. People are even afraid to think against the government because of thoughtcrime. If someone looks suspicious anyone can accuse them of thoughtcrime which eventually will lead to death because you can't prove you weren't thinking against the government. Throughout 1984, George Orwell gives the reader a sense of darkness and despair. Oceania's mainland is called Air Strip One, which was formerly England. Showing Oceania full of destroyed buildings and bombed-out clearings really hits home with readers. This gives people the chance to visualize a well known place under complete destruction. V for Vendetta gives off the same exact feeling throughout the entire film. It takes place in England also but has a vigilante hero. Both the movie and book have a feeling of deep hatred towards an unstoppable government. In both Orwell’s novel 1984 and the film V for Vendetta the protagonists Winston Smith and V live in similar difficult lives with extreme and controlling governments where they cannot cope with the reality because there’s a big gap between reality and utopia, therefore thy create a lot of problems in order to change the government. The government limits the freedom of the citizens. Some people are content with the lives they have known and the others are not. Being that there are different age groups in the society, there are different ideals. For example in the movie V for Vendetta, some people were happy to live in the society ruled by chancellor Sulter, but the others are not. Many feel that they should have the rights and freedom to listen to the music they want, date the people they love, and/or read what they want. On the other hand, in the novel 1984, belief in the progress of humanity and the ability of people to institute peace and justice in the world. These contrasting views set up the premise for the life of Winston Smith, who is one man caught in a society devoted to conformity. This is the world in which Winston Smith is caught in. He is different from the others and in a civilization which does not approve of individuality. Winston is targeted by the government from the beginning. Being different in this populace only means rebellion and that exactly is what Winston sets out to do The themes were similar but there were many differences as well. For example, the resistance in 1984 was subtle if it existed at all while the resistance in V for Vendetta was violent and actively opposing the government through force. The themes were the same or similar in that corrupt government that stifle the people's thoughts shouldn’t be tolerated. They are also similar in the aspect that they all provide fairly grim and horrifying visions of the future and try to portray the ultimate horror that can befell human beings - the suppression of free will. This injustice is so huge and unbearable that characters begin to rebel, whether the rebellion is more in thought than in act like in 1984 or when it is more drastic like in V for Vendetta.
