What do you do or say, if anything, in each of these situations, and why'
In the case of the amateur pilot wearing a tie adorned with the P51D Mustang and the B-29 Superfortress to a meeting with Japanese executives, I would quietly advise him that the tie may be offensive to the Japanese executives and ask him to remove it. If someone else in the room has an extra tie that he can wear for the time he can wear it for the meeting if a tie is absolutely needed. If not, then just do not worry about wearing the tie. If a tie is needed and there’s not anyone there with an extra and the pilot does need to be in the meeting, then I would ask a secretary or office assistant to go out and purchase a tie for the pilot. Once the meeting was over or has taken a break, I would find out if the amateur pilot knew the significance and meaning behind the tie he was wearing. If he did not know the meaning behind the tie, then I would explain to him what it meant and how it might be offensive to the Japanese executives. If he did know what it symbolized, I would advise him not to ever wear any clothing articles that are offensive to anyone again because our company does not promote and will not tolerate such behavior.
If I was hosting three clients and I knew that I had a maximum spending limit of $118 between cash and credit, I would not take them to a restaurant that has a meal for $40. Instead, I would take them all to a less expensive yet elegant restaurant that offers rich, filling, and quality food. The restaurant of choosing would not be a well-known or chain restaurant. In fact, this particular restaurant will probably be one that I frequent often and have established a relationship with the owner so if ever a circumstance like arises, I will have the option of treating the clients to promising meal and not have to worry about the bill until I actually have the money to pay for the meal without putting myself in a financial bind. I in fact would tell the clients that I want to take them to this restaurant because I feel they will better appreciate the food, environment, atmosphere, and friendliness of the staff.
Depending on if I liked the middle manager rehearsing his speech will determine if I said anything to him about his shirt protruding from his pants. I’m just joking; I would walk over to the other manager and simply whisper to him that he has needs to correct the issue before he walks out on stage if I’m within speaking distance of him. If I’m not within speaking distance of him, I would try and get his attention in a subtle fashion and illustrate to him that he should zip his pants. By indicating to him that he needs to zips his pants, I would hope he would look down and see the issue and correct it before he walks out on stage.
I personally cannot stand to be around people that smoke because the smoke is not only killing them, but it is killing non-smokers as well. Not only does it cause harm to non- inhabitants, it also causes their hair and clothes to smell like smoke. In the case where my office building has a no-smoking policy in all its buildings and one of my co-workers consistently smokes in the bathroom I would make him aware of the policy and suggest to him the areas where smoking is allowed. If he continues to break the rules of the building, I will advise him that I will report him to his supervisor or manager. I will further advise him that it is not fair to non-smokers to be subjected to his second hand smoke. The rules are in place for a reason, we should all follow them. I would further let them make an ethical decision by telling them, “just because you don’t care about your own life, must you kill everyone that comes in contact with your second hand smoke'” Hopefully this will wake him up and takes others’ lives into consideration when he decides to break the rules of the building.
Sometimes you have to let people come to themselves, this includes letting them fall to calamity or disaster and realizing where they went wrong and consider what they did in order for them to correct their behavior. The office manager in this case event either is drunk or has no office etiquette at all. If she is at a business meeting and she is drunk then that says a lot about her organization and what is acceptable behavior for managers in treating clients to dinner to close on a deal. If this manager is drunk and this behavior is not favored by her company, she should be advised and corrected on the issue. If she is not drunk and just doesn’t have proper table etiquette then she should take a course in dining etiquette so that she will know how to act when taking potential clients to dinner.
