Roles and responsibilitiesSchool governors – Lead schools, they are there to give long term strategic direction to how schools are run, and make sure the head is doing her job properly. Governors discuss and have input on:- * School policies, such as discipline, dress, sport, bullying and homework * Long term plans and the futures of schools * How the budget will be spent * How the school will try to reach performance targets * Drafting the annual reports to parents * Hiring and firing staff * Complaints from pupils, staff and parents * Repair and maintained of schools buildings * Use of school premises outside school hoursThe governing body often appoints a certain group of governors to look at specific issues such as the schools finance, staffing, curriculum and premises.The senior management team - (S.M.T) is usually made up of the head teacher and deputy head. In some schools there may also be assistant or senior head teachers, with particular responsibilities like leading a key stage or certain subjects. Sometimes a SENCO might be a member also. Their role is to set the strategic direction of the school and then manage it and discuss issues that have to be put before the school governors. They also lead any changes and make sure the school is delivering to its students.SENCO - (Special Needs Co-ordinator) is a member of staff who is responsible for the children that need special needs education within a school. They have to follow the SEN policy. All schools have a SENCO and they work with the school and parents to ensure the needs of special needs children are being met. SENCO’s can access children to see what help they need and then will give the child an IEP (Individual Education Plan) this could include the help that’s already being given, who will provide it and how often, what help a parent can give their child at home, the progress a child is making and how often their progress will be checked.Cover Teachers – Are trained staff that supervise pupils and carry out pre-prepared classroom learning when the teachers are absent or on catch up days.Specialist and Technical Staff – Are available in schools to provide valuable know how and resources that support teaching and learning.Family Workers – Work with parents, carers and pupils within the school.Office Staff – Provide administrative support to the school. They are the first port of call in schools; they have contact with head teachers, teachers, parents, governors and visitors to the school.Caretaker – Plays an important role within the school ensuring the environment is clean, safe and tidy.Cooks – These are sometimes run by outside catering companies. They prepare meals and plan the school menus to a fixed budget. Cleaners – Clean the school and contribute to maintaining a healthy and safe environment. They usually work before school starts in the morning or when the school day ends.There are many external agencies that work within schools, such as:-Educational Psychologists – Who asses the needs of children who need additional support and help with the planning how their needs may best be met. They report these findings to SENCO and can issue statements of special education needs ( usually called a ‘Statement’)Education Welfare Officers – (EWO’s) that support schools in pursuing its worst attender, whether they are truants, have health problems or family issues. They can also visit peoples home if needed.Police – Can regularly visit schools to inform them of local crimes and gangs operating in the area, this notifies the schools of problems which children could be draw into. The police can give talks on topics such as carrying dangerous weapons to discourage their use and drugs to prevent their use.Social Workers – Work with schools to safeguard and promote the welfare of children who have safety issues or behavioural problems. They work with parents and schools. When concerns about a child has been raised, socialworkers decide on the course of action that needs to be taken. They carry outassessments and have interviews with children and family members, and can also take action when a child is in immediate danger. Health Professionals – Such as the school nurse or matron, has to provide preventative health services to cover pupil’s physical, mental, emotional and social growth and development. They carry out observations on children to test their hearing, eyesight, height and weight. They also participate in health talks for education purposes. A health professional also manage the immunisations required. They tend to all on-site medical care for all pupils, staff and outside visitors, manage the medical areas and administer medicines as necessary. Health professionals may examine children with injuries they suspect may be non-accidental. They have a duty to alert Social Services when abuse is suspected and give reports to them, also they may give evidence in court.NSPCC – Protect children from harm. They have the power, given by law, to take action when children are at risk of abuse. The NSPCC also provide a helpline for worried people to call about a child and for children to call who are in distress or danger. | 3022.1 |

If a child who has special needs help does not progress then a SENCO can make contact with their parents to see what outside help they may require.First Aider – Schools should have at least one qualified first aider, but in many schools the TAs are First Aid trained. Assistant should know the location of the First Aid boxes in school and who the other trained First Aiders are. They need to have completed a training course approved by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) which is valid for three years. They are responsible for maintaining the medical equipment and restocking when necessary. They should date stamp all medical supplies when they are received as they only have a five year shelf life.Head Teacher – Is responsible for implementing school policies and procedures, making sure everyone follow them and the National Curriculum. The head teacher also has to maintain links with all external agencies and be part of the schools governing body and attend all meetings.Deputy head – Works closely with the Head teacher to manage the school. The deputy head may or may not have another teaching position but must be able to meet with the head on a daily basis to discuss the goings on within the school. They have to get cover when a teacher is absent and if the head is way for any reason then the deputy head takes over.Teachers – Have to do planning and preparing to deliver the national curriculum to pupils. That involves doing long term plans that are based over a term, medium term plans that are based over a week and short term plans that are based over one day. Teachers teach pupils according to their ability and assess and record all pupils and report on their progress made. They have to take responsibility for all other adults in their classrooms, communicate with parents and other external people. They are also subject leaders who are responsible for managing a certain area of the curriculum e.g. science or maths.Learning Support Staff – They include Teaching Assistants (T.A’s) and Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTA’s) They work with teachers in the classroom helping pupils progress with their learning and Higher Level TA’s can take a class if needed.Behaviour Support Staff – Work with children with behaviour issues. They take sessions with children to help modify their behaviour or hold social groups to focus on behaviour, knowing the school rules and following them and social behaviour. | |
