Unit 204- Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people In this essay I will be showing my understanding of the importance of promoting equality and diversity in work with children and young people. It is important to support participation and equality of access so that every pupil has the same opportunities offered to them regardless of personal background. The Equality Act 2010 states that there are seven types of dicrimination, which are > Associative discrimination: Direct discrimination against someone because they are associated with another person with a protected characteristic. > Indirect discrimination: When you have a rule or policy that applies to evrryone but disadvantages a person with a protected characteristic. > Harrasment by a third party. > Victimisation: Discrimination against someone because they have made or supported a complaint. > Dicrimination by perception: Direct discrimination against someone because others think they have protected characterisic(even if they don't). If we ignored these guidelines we would not be offering the children the same opportunities as those we didn't discriminate against. Within a school equality, diversity and inclusion is very important. It is the schools duty to make sure all the children have equal access to the curriculum. Whether they are of a different race, culture or gender or have a special need or disability, it is important they are supported and have the right to participate and be treated equal. As part of this it is important schools and other proffesionals support and promote culteral diversity in schools and the wider community, breaking down any discriminatory barriers to learning. In a school participation means that everyone has to be involved and this involves the inclusion of children. The government is commited to the childrens rights and participation. Under article twelve of the United Nations convention on the rights of the child(UNCRC) children and young people have the right to express their views and for these to be respected by adults when making decisions on matters that affect them. This means that the schools have to involve the children in the planning, delivery and evolution of the curriculum on a daily basis, asking the children what they think, what works and what they think could be better. Children should be given opportunities to express their opinion in matters that affect their lives. Effective participation gives children and young people the opportunity to make a positive contribution to their learning and to develop skills, confidence and self esteem they will need for the future. It is important to have diversity in the classroom and to promote this because our society has become so diverse itself so it will help children outside school as well as in, to become all round better human beings. In conclusion it is very inportant to promote equality and diversity when working with children and young people as it helps them grow and learn for the future.
