Task 1 Part A -
‘ Even in our leisure time, we are all “managers” now.’
PLANNING – I have planned my team selection for Saturday’s football match.
In section 2.4 Henri Fayol refers to ‘planning’ as one of the management processes. Looking ahead, assessing the future and making provision of it. Block 2, page 21.
ORGANISING – I have organised the collection of the minibus from the local hire company to ensure the team has appropriate transport to travel to the destination of our football match.
In section 2.4 Henri Fayol refers to organising as one of the management processes. This allows planned activities to be carried out. Block 2, page 21.
INFORMATIONAL ACTIVITY – I have ‘monitored’ the performance of my assistant manager ensuring his tasks have been completed correctly.
In section 2.4 Professor Henry Mintzberg divided the manager’s job into 10 different roles of which he then clustered into 3 main groups of activity. Block 3, page’s 22 and 23. Within this activity the manager monitor’s the performance of the staff.
INTERPERSONAL ACTIVITY – By being the manager I have given my team’s players and staff a ‘figurehead’ as well as providing a main point of contact to the referee’s for the actual football match.
In section 2.4 Professor Henry Mintzberg divided the manager’s job into 10 different roles of which he then clustered into 3 main groups of activity. Block 3, page’s 22 and 23. Within this activity the manager acts as a figurehead who in turn represents the organisation.
COORDINATING – By ‘coordinating’ my team I have ensured all the delegated duties have been issued to the correct individuals and fully understood by those responsible for each task.
In section 2.4 Henri Fayol refers to coordinating as one of the management processes. This provides direction to staff and resources to which they are responsible for. Block 2, page 21

Task 1 Part B –
‘ Even in our leisure time, we are all “managers” now.’
INTRODUCTION - Within this essay by using theories of Henri Fayol and Professor Henry Mintzberg I shall aim to identify management processes in my personal life and link these to those explained in the module booklet. This I hope will explain why I believe that ‘ Even in our leisure time, we are all “managers” now.’
MAIN BODY – Throughout this module the word manager has become a more interesting subject for me as an individual. By understanding the five management processes of Henri Fayol it has become clear that these principles are used by me every day. Fayol’s five processes were seen as guiding principles for all managers in how and what they should be doing in their job. Overtime this has become known as the classical approach to management. These being Planning, Organising, Leading, Coordinating and Controlling. A later concept was documented by Professor Henry Mintzberg in which he made a study of the work that managers actually do on a day to day basis. He divided this into ten separate roles and clustered into three groups of activity. These groups are Interpersonal, Informational and Decisional. The ten roles include that of being a leader of which is also one of Fayol’s processes. This skill in management was also recognised by others even so far back as ancient times ‘Alexander the Great and Sun Tzu. These individuals are said to be born with this skill aswell as this being a trait you can learn. To lead is to understand what actually motivates people. In most instances people remain motivated by what the rewards are at the end of the day. Typically this can be put into two categories, being Extrinsic and Intrinsic. Abraham Maslow originally put forward this theory which we now refer to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. His belief was that we are all driven by our personal needs and wants to provide a sense of security in life. These theories along with others can be used not only in the workplace but also in our outside of work activities. I would like to now show you my own personal experiences in which I can give evidence these are used.
There are many ways in that I realise the management skills required in my outside of work activities can be related to the elements of processes and thoughts contained within the module booklet. I would of thought that to manage is to plan, organise and fulfil certain requirements within one’s business, yet before I studied this course I then only gained an understanding the uniqueness of what is really involved.

Task 1 Part B continued -
I have planned my team selection for my football match this Saturday whilst bearing in mind I have injuries to some key players. Fayol mentions that by looking ahead we can make provisions. As we are a feeder club to teams above us in the pyramid I have therefore made provisions for these injuries by negotiating in loan players to fill the voids created by those injured. By being the decision maker I have arranged that all staff and players are to meet at a specific time and location. Mintzberg activity of decision making. The kit and medical equipment shall be collected individually by my physio.
My management style I know shall be completely different today than what it would be in my day job. To provide leadership to my team today it will be very important that I have made clear to everyone associated with today’s activity that a win would ensure we go back to the top of the league. This I tell them is all the motivation we need to perform at our best. A key factor in leadership is understanding exactly what encourages individuals to perform to the best of their abilities.
By means of rewards we can break these into two groups being Extrinsic and Intrinsic rewards. Abraham Maslow originally put forward this theory of individual development and motivation. Although my players maybe highly motivated this does not guarantee they will perform. Another example can be that of the Expectancy theory ‘Vroom 1964’ He notes that in order for us to receive such rewards we will have to make an effort , perform a task and produce an outcome. Expectancy of our reward will be based on being positive to make the effort, complete the task and deliver the end product, thus improving your performance.
By coordinating my assistant manager, physio and coach, their individual duties / delegated tasks are allocated to them with clear instructions to which I ensure have been clearly understood by each person.
Once we have arrived at our destination it will be necessary to liaise with the referee’s for the day and the opposition’s management team. I shall remain the figurehead in this instance to maintain the representation of my team. I have gathered the information from my coach I require from the warm up session to select a formation that I believe can win this particular match.

Task 1 Part B continued –
By controlling the day’s activities with a schedule that was kept to the planned outputs, all resources being used appropriately we have produced a great win, travelled home safely and celebrated our win together in the bar!
By monitoring my player’s individual performances today it will be easier for me to select the team for the next fixture.
CONCLUSION - Although the processes of Fayol have clearly been used by me today, I believe that the methods and theories of Mintzberg are more to my personal circumstances. I feel that a significant proportion of my management skills involve communicating with lots of different people, using a variety of methods. By creating a mind map I was able to illustrate my thoughts more clearly and precisely.
