I've modeled for a professional modeling agency, I've hiked up Cloud Peak in the beautiful Yellowstone National Park, I've swam along side sharks in the Bahamas, and I’ve skied down the snow covered peeks of Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Yet I never envisioned myself guiding my peers through their high school journey. The first three years of high school consisted of nothing more than a lifeless routine. My life was somnambulant, waiting for something intriguing to occur. My junior year was the straw that broke the camel’s back. I was sick of waiting. Feeling ambitious I decided to be the one to make that intriguing event occur and applied for secretary of my class. After taking this initiative, however, I was surprised at all the responsibilities and obstacles that were attached to this role. It was required of me to shadow the current officer routine. This meant, planning and attending numerous after school activities, communicating different plans to the student body and collecting their feedback, and finding the most suitable way to get the most with the budget that was provided for us. In order to do this I had to step out of my comfort zone. I always looked up to those who had the courage to go above and beyond. Therefore, not only did i see winning the spot as class secretary as an opportunity to break out of my shell but also a way to inspire others to do the same. I had to dispose of the diffidence and lack of confidence that had prevented me from enjoying my previous years in high school. I was determined to prove to those around me that I could break out of this inactive, slothful lifestyle and embark on an exciting and prosperous one. No longer did I shadow other people's opinions in a conversation but spoke out and gave my own. No longer did I receive commands but gave out some of my own. No longer did I walk the halls of my school with my head down low but instead held it up high with an aura of confidence. Many times i was slapped with discouragement but I moved forward towards my goal without once looking back. Class secretary has showed me responsibility, during the summer when all my friends were out having a splendid time, I was at school planning out activities for the upcoming year. This experience has also taught me the importance of being neutral and getting along with all types of people. You can put me at a table with people of all different types of cultures and i guarantee you that by the end of that day I would have carried a successful conversation with all of them. I am a changed person inside and out because of this wonderful experience. I have what it takes; all I need is your acceptance.
