2.How has your family history, culture or environment influenced who you are'
4.What qualities or unique characteristics do you possess that would allow you to contribute to the UCF community'
My family is not the typical middle class caucasian family with 2.3 children living in the suburbs. My parents have provided an environment teaching my brother and I to embrace family and embrace the world around you, which has had a huge influence on who I am.
Growing up, technically my immediate family consists of four members, but in reality we have had many more. Every few months there always seemed to be a new person in our guest room. Throughout my four years in high school we had people ranging from a single mom and her two children, a Full Sail student trying to finish college, and a grandmother who wanted to stay near her church, living with us for six months to a year. This was also excluding my brother’s two band mates who I found eating and sleeping at our house at least three days a week.
While we we’re the most affluent family, my parents stressed the importance of people over possessions, and live that out. They are continually giving to others, along with my brother and I, leaving only what is left over in both money and time, they leave for themselves.
It is being in an environment with my parents continual selfless actions, and in that process exposing me to meet many different types of people, with very different needs that has shaped who I am, and who I aspire to be in the future.
Taking what I have learned from my family, along my passions, I believe I can contribute in a positive way to the UCF community. In a debate class my professor said to find a hole in the opponents case, and attack it. I try to pocket those words and apply them in everyday life. I believe one of my biggest contributing factors is that I like to find holes whether in organizations, or in everyday life and fill them. I am apart of Phi Theta Kappa at Seminole State, and when the chapter president was leaving, and on proper candidates were running, I decided to fill the gap, and won. Another instance happened where the recycling was stopped in our honors department, so I volunteered to take the goods home and use my own bin so they wouldn’t be dumped in the trash.
I am also very passionate about creating. I was in charge of the creative team for a youth group, and as a team we would design and execute stage and lobby designs for the youth. Now currently I work with a photographer shooting most weddings, and throughout the week I edit the photos taken.
It is through the care of other, and leaning how to do so with creative processes that help me view the world with a different lens. Through that lens I can hopefully, use those skills to fill in where I am needed in the UCF community.
