The Twilight Saga: The Breaking Dawn Part One- I’m Late Stephanie Moeller ENG225: Introduction to Film (GSK1245A) Alene Morrison November 21, 2012 Based on the novel by Stephenie Meyer, the 2011 film, The Twilight Sage Breaking Dawn Part One, is based on true love of a vampire and a human which a werewolf that is in love with the human. Every movie has a script to go by before they make a movie. The scene I choose from movie clips is, I’m Late, which is when Bella starts the scene off by puking in the toilet, she knows she’s late for starting her period but doesn’t think it’s possible that she could be pregnant since she married a vampire and it’s never happened before. There are a lot of people involved in making this movie that earned 30.3 million that practically broke the box office based on the screening which they set a Franchise Record With $30.3 Million from Midnight Screenings (Cinemablend, 2011) The director of The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part One is Bill Condon, who is in charge of making sure he interprets the script into personal vision and decides the overall “look” with the production designer and cinematographer and directs actors and the action while shooting. (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011) Bill Condon had to decide where he wanted to shoot the film, after reading over the script. He decided to shoot the film in Vancouver, Canada and Baton Rouge, Louisiana; they also did a one night shot in Lapa District in Rio de Janeiro. The production designer of the movie is Richard Simmons, who is in charge of helping directors to achieve the film's visual requirements, and in providing producers with carefully calculated schedules which offer viable ways of making films within agreed budgets and specified periods of time. They also make sure the set or location is vital in drawing the audience into the story, and is an essential element in making a film convincing and evocative. (Media Match Inc, 2012) The art directors of the movie are Lorin Flemming, Nate Frederburg and Troy Sizemore, which they are all in charge of keeping the sets, props, and costumes appropriate to the story and characters, and historically accurate if necessary. (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011) The cinematography of the movie is Guillermo Navarro, which he is in charge of camera placements, lens, and lighting choices; sometimes operates camera but usually has a camera crew. (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011) Guillermo did an excellent job of lighting in this scene; the lighting throughout the scene is high-key lighting, you can’t see any shadows throughout the scene and has low contrast between the brightest and darkest parts of the scene. The lighting to me affects me emotional, makes me lost because watching it for the first time you wonder what’s going on or what’s going to happen since Bella is throwing up in the toilet. The mood that evoked me was sad and excited, it made me sad because I don’t like watching people get sick but it also made me excited because I knew where it was going since she ate something that didn’t agree with her stomach and she was late on her period. The lighting has a very big part of any movie because if you don’t get the lighting right it can ruin a scene or the whole movie. You have to have the lighting just right to draw the attention of the audience or they won’t be interested in watching anymore of it. The setting takes place on Edwards parents privately owned island called El Esme, which his father bought for his mother as a birthday gift one year, which is located around Rio. The costuming of a character can tell you a lot about that certain character. In this scene Bella is wearing a long sleeve white shirt and a pair of gray shorts to me it tells me that she just got out of bed or is getting ready for bed, since that’s what I wear to bed also, and she doesn’t really care how she looks sometimes because she wants to be comfortable. Edward is wearing a button up blue shirt with a gray white beater underneath and khaki shorts; this tells me that he is somewhat of a dress up kind of guy. He likes to dress up no matter what they’re doing or where there at. Some ways that costuming can be used to reflect the elements of the plot of the story are how things are happening in certain scenes. For instance, in this scene the costumes fit perfect because they are their honeymoon and to me are just trying to enjoy their time together and have fun. Hair and makeup have a lot to do with telling stories. In this scene Bella’s hair is somewhat mess because she just woke up and to me it doesn’t look like she’s wearing any makeup considering she just got out of bed. Edward’s hair is always spiked up and he always has a white face since he’s a vampire. The hairstyle that Bella has in the scene revels that she’s laid back and doesn’t really care what people think of her, all she cares about is Edward. Edwards hair and makeup has to make him look like a vampire, so he’s white in color and his hair is always shining because it’s so light and blonde. The mise-en-scene is perfect for this scene because they want the attention to be on Bella and Edward, while they figure out if it’s possible she can be pregnant or not. The elements in this scene of the movie appear to work together because Bella is feeling lost since she thought getting pregnant by a vampire while still being human was possible. Edward feels upset because he knew there would be a big problem if she really was pregnant with the head masters of vampires, and Edward has the attitude of being really mad because he can’t believe this is happening and wants to get whatever it is inside Bella out and right now before it kills her. I think the scene could be discordant since they are disagreeing about whether Bella is really pregnant or not. The design elements are congruent with the filmmaker’s vision of the scene. This scene I don’t think you could really mess up even if you tried. If you read over the script good enough and get the thoughts in your head of how to put the scene together then there shouldn’t be a problem with messing up how the filmmaker wants the scene done right. co References Goodykoontz, B., & Jacobs, C.
