City road comparisons and contrasts with Busby road. City road is a mile long stretch of road in Cardiff which plays a central feature to many different people from the area. There are many inequalities that can be seen throughout city road and it is these that I will look at in this essay. Using the DVD and learning companion to describe the inequalities that exist in city road and will also refer to my street of choice Busby Road in Clarkston on the South side of Glasgow is also approximately 1 mile long and I will use it to draw comparisons and contrast that exist in its own right as well as in regards to city road. This essay will focus on the shops types, the people of the area and the use of space in each street. City road in Cardiff is a main street whereby there is a vast amount of restaurants and take away's which cater primarily to the ethnic minorities and students which highly populate this areas. The restaurants cater for British, Greek, Spanish, Kurdish and Pakistani ethnic groups as well as having many different varieties of shops from African extravaganza to an auto trader and a Tesco. This shows the inequalities that exist within this area in regards to the people around in which the shops and restaurants cater for – a broad range of people and nationalities. Busby road differs from that of City road in regards to the shops that it has. There is very few restaurants and only a few take aways which primarily cater for Indian, Italian and Chinese ethnicities. This relates to the population that stay in the surrounding area which is primarily, British families and older couples. This is not a student area and so there is little around which caters for such a group. Busby road like Cardiff road has inequalities in regards to the shops, there is charity shops and corner shops dotted around but primarily more recently there has been an upsurge of upper class shops, selling antiques, and brand names such as Ted Baker. This shows the variance of class status from working to middle class, also catering to upper class. This is different from city road whereby there is none if any high end shops, and instead caters to the important groups – students and ethnic minorities which shops that sell saris for example. The use of space is also important in regards to the inequality that exists in both Busby road and city road. City road is the main street that people go to and is a focus throughout the day and into the evening when it becomes a source of entertainment through the nightclub. There is parking although limited but there is active bus routes and taxi ranks available for transport to and from the road as and when required. Whereas Busby road is more of a commuter location as there is no direct link to students, and so the shops are quick stop off points for local people and passers through to grab some lunch, some groceries or a quick shop. There is less variety than that of Cardiff road and with the limited restaurants there is not a constant flow of traffic. The parking on both streets is limited by the roadside with short stay limits, which is relevant to both the streets as they both cater to the people who live by each in their own way as opposed to the wider surrounding area. In conclusion there is many inequalities on City road as there is on Busby road, they each have different people to cater for and so this has lead to different shops, while city road has a lot of restaurants, take away's and a club Busby road is primarily shops, and baker with the odd restaurant as there is a different need in Busby road for these shops compared with City road. The use of space is similar in both streets as they cater for the locals and so parking is not a desperate required feature for the streets as there is local access through, walking, buses and taxi's if required in both locations. Each road has continually changing shops, due to the need of the people, the economic situation or the migration to the area. Inequalities exist everywhere and this is clear on both city road and Busby road.
