Look carefully at plate 1.3.24 Cezanne’s jug and fruit (1885-87) and plate 1.3.30, Zurbaran’s still life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose (1633). In no more than 500 words, outline what you think are the main differences between them. Speaking from a personal perspective (1) the two paintings are very different.(full stop) Cezanne’s - Cézanne’s work appears to be very rustic and natural while Zurbaran’s - Zubarán’s (2) appears very precise and staged. (3) Looking more closely at the two paintings you start to see the technical differences. Cezanne has chosen to use broad expressive multi directional brush strokes known as patiently (4), you can clearly see the brush strokes without having to closely inspect the painting, this gives an overall effect of the painting being very rustic looking .On the other hand Zurbaran has used neater finer brushstrokes known as liner (4), this gives the painting a cleaner crisper finish, you have to inspect the painting very closely to see the brush strokes. This gives the painting a much cleaner, crisper neater look than Cezanne’s (5). In looking closer at the paintings we can see that Cezanne has used a narrow tonal range witch which is created when the difference between light and dark are minimal giving a less dramatic effect, h. He has also used a smaller colour palate this which gives the painting a cool, calm natural appreance appearance adding to the rusticness of the painting. Zurbaran on the other hand has used a much wider tonal range , by doing this he has created a much more dramatic and dynamic look to his painting the contrast between the lightest and darkest parts of the painting give a very dramatic overall affect , the light source also helps with this affect. The fruit is starkly lit producing deep shadows whereas Cezanne’s whole painting is a lot lighter there are fewer deep shadows producing a less dramatic affect. (6) If we look at the overall composition of the two paintings we notice that Cezanne’s at first appearance looks very natural because (you need a conjunctive here) he has not used light and shadows to dramatically change/stage his subject matter. , whereas Zurbaran on the other hand/however, has used light to create deep shadows. Tthe fruit is centre stage and Zurbaran has also painted a lot more detail. if If you look closely at the fruit you can see every pit and mark in the skins of the oranges and lemons the individual lines of the wicker in the basket, the sheen of the silver saucer. Whereas Cezanne’s painting lacks the fine detail. Cezanne’s painting looks almost every day he could have walked into anyone’s kitchen and found this natural scene, Whereas Zurbaran’s seems more staged as if he is trying to create a scean scene. Tthe objects on the table appear to be very important, to have a meaning of their own whereas (you also need a conjunctive here) the background has no detail and is obscured by shadow making the objects and the table stand out.(7) 1) This is a good response – we talked in the day school about using our instincts when looking at a painting and this is a good way to start the essay. The only thing I would mention is that: from a personal perspective – using the word ‘perspective’ suggests you are going to describe how this perspective will influence your judgement of the paintings. I think what you are really talking about is here is your reaction, your immediate response and it’s fine to say that so it’s just a question of wording here. 2) I think I’ve had to say this to everyone, but strictly speaking both of these names should be written with their accents as I have done. In their respective languages, to leave the accent off means to spell the name incorrectly. However, I know that it isn’t always easy to insert foreign accents on our keyboards so I’m assuming that’s what’s happened here. You could try going to on your toolbar then clicking then scrolling down until the correct letter with its accent appears. 3) A good point because it immediately draws attention to the differences which is what the question has asked you to do. 4) I don’t understand what you mean by ‘patiently’ and ‘liner’ here, neither are terms associated with the formal components of a work of art. There is some general confusion throughout this section with many of the terms so I would suggest having a read through section 3.2 (page 63-67 Book 1) to remind yourself. It’s also very useful to actually do the activities in Chapter 3 because it helps you to understand this process of analysis when discussing works of art. 5) You are tending to repeat yourself here. Try to pick this kind of repetition up when you edit your work. 6) It’s good to mention the differences in tone between the two colour palettes and to point out the \effect this has on the viewer. Again though, think about how you can widen this discussion to move beyond this to analyse why and how they have done this – Chapter 3 will help you in this respect. 7) I like the way you discuss the composition of the paintings towards the end here but there is some repetition in this section too. Maybe you could have considered these elements of composition earlier when you discuss shade and tone for example. Assignment 02 : Part 1. NEW DRAFT: Look carefully at plate 1.3.24 Cezanne’s jug and fruit (1885-87) and plate 1.3.30, Zurbaran’s still life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose (1633). In no more than 500 words, outline what you think are the main differences between them. My immediate reaction to the two paintings is how very different they are. Cézanne’s work appears to be very rustic and natural. While Zurbarán’s appears to be staged and very precise. Looking more closely at the two paintings you start to see the technical differences. Cézanne has chosen to use broad expressive multie directional brush strokes. You can clearly see the brush strokes without having to closely inspect the painting. This gives an overall effect of the painting being very rustic looking; also seeing the brush strokes reminds the person viewing the painting that it is still a painting an impression of what the artist is seeing. On the other hand Zurbarán has used neater finer brush strokes smoothing over the brush strokes so that you cannot see them. This gives the painting a cleaner, crisper finish. You have to inspect the painting very closely to see the brush strokes. Zurbarán’s painting looks more realistic and less like a painting. The composition of the two paintings are vastly different Zurbarán has used a wide tonal range meaning there is a vast contrast between the lightest and darkest parts of the painting. Doing this has given the painting a very dramatic appearance. He has also used a light to enhance this affect the fruit is starkly lit so it appears centre stage and the most important part of the painting while the background and table the fruit is on is hidden in deep shadows. Zurbarán has also painted a lot more detail into is picture. When you look closely at the painting you can see every pit on the skin of the lemons every strand of wicker in the basket the reflections in the silver saucers. The background doesn’t seem as important as the fruit as you cannot see it in as much detail. Zurbarán has composed his painting to make the fruit stand out it has an almost photographic quality. Cézanne on the other hand has chosen to use a very narrow tonal range there isn’t a stark difference between the lightest and darkest parts of the painting he has also used a smaller colour palette. He has also painted less detail the techniques Cézanne has used gives his painting a much more natural look less staged more real. Seeing the brushstrokes reminds you that it is still a painting an impression of what the artist is seeing. Cézanne doesn’t seem to have staged his painting at all he could have walked into any kitchen of the time and painted the scene he saw. Assignment 02: Part 2. I have decided to re work part two of the first assignment, Look carefully at plate 1.3.24 Cezanne’s jug and fruit (1885-87) and plate 1.3.30, Zurbaran’s still life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose (1633). I have decided to do this as this part of the assignment I didn’t feel I had done very well the first time. I do not believe I completely grasped the point of the question also shown in my tutor’s comments. I have chosen to re work the whole assignment answer as I felt it would work a lot better and give a more fluid answer than just re working parts of the answer. I still feel as though I have not grasped the technical aspects of this assignment and do not feel I have coved them in as much detail as I should have. I do not feel comfortable using all the technical terms as I do not understand them all and would probably use them in the wrong context. This is something I will have to keep reading and looking into until I fully understand them and can use the technical terms confidently.
