FMEA is used to identify potential failure modes, determine their effect on the operation of the product, and identify actions to mitigate the failures. | FMEA help the engineer identify potential product or process failures. If a new product breaks down then this will identify why it broke down or it will identify what is wrong with it before it breaks down. | Flow chart | The information in a flow chart will have information on the process. | When you are starting a new project you can use this to outline the steps of that process. | Cause–and-effect diagram | A diagram based technique that combines brainstorming with a type of mind map, it allows you to consider all causes of the problem opposed to just the ones that are obvious. | This tool will be most applicable if a problem occurs and you need to figure out why it occurred then you can do that by exploring all the ways it could have caused it. | Check sheet | A structured prepared form that is used to collect and analyze data. | This tool will be most applicable when collecting data repeatedly by the same person or at the same location, from a production process, or collecting data on the frequency, patterns of events, problems, defects, defect location, and defect causes. |
