Three Securities
I like the idea of security because in my mind it’s such an important part of every one’s life. When I get into my car and put on my seat belt I feel secure. When I lock the car door I feel even more secure. When I am with my wife and children I feel the emotional security that my family provides. And when I’m working and bring in a paycheck I am providing the financial security that my family needs. In a way when I put these things together I can come up with a fantasy picture of an old style barbarian warrior standing on a hill. He has a chest of gold to provide financial security, a sword in his hand to provide physical security, and his woman at his side who provides emotional security.
I think that in today’s world financial security is so impotent. It would be nice to be able to buy what I want, when I want, and not to have to worry about where the money will come from. But I do not believe that is the case for most people at this time. With the economy in such a rut right now, and people losing their jobs, financial security is hard to come by for a lot of people. For example I lost my job six months ago and went through all my savings just to live. Now I’m living on unemployment and it’s tough to make ends meet. It would be nice to have some more money set aside. I haven’t had to get into my 401K and I’m hoping not to. I would like to keep that for my retirement which is one of the biggest parts of financial security in my point of view. To be able to retire and not have to worry about money is still a dream of mine.
In the really olden days men and some women would wear a sword, and use it to provide physical security for themselves and their family. But in the modern world things are a lot different, if a person was wearing a sword they would probably be arrested and go to jail. But there are other types of physical security that is needed, when I get into a car I put on my seat belt, when I get on a plane I am required to wear a seat belt, both of these are for my safety (physical security). When I was in the Army we used to repel either down a cliff or out of a helicopter, but we always had a safety rope for our physical security. Some other types of physical security could be an alarm system in your home, or strong locks on your doors you could even get a guard dog. In a nut shell Physical security can be as simple as a locked door or as elaborate as multiple layers of barriers and armed guards.
I wonder if the most important security of all would be emotional security. “Wikipedia” describes “Emotional security as the measure of the stability of an individual's emotional state”. “The idea of emotional security of a person is to be distinguished from that of emotional safety or the security provided by a non-threatening, supportive environment. A person whose general happiness is not shaken by a disturbance in their life might be said to be emotionally secure”. I know that when I have my wife to lean on for support, it’s an emotional support that I need. Someone to tell me that everything is going to be ok someone to just hold onto until the shaking inside stops, someone to just make me feel better about myself.
So when I have financial security I know I can purchases what I want, a car, a boat, some clothes, or a house, or even go on a vacation around the world. These are some of the things I can do with financial security. And it can even buy me physical security I could use my finances to buy a car with better safety features, to better protect my children and myself. I could get an alarm system, for my new house, car or boat or even armed guards to protect all of it. But would any of this be any good if I didn’t have emotional security. If I wasn’t secure in myself would I be able too much of anything at all' I’m not sure, but I don’t think so. So I think that emotional security just might be the most important security of all.
* I used some quotes from Wikipedia in the paragraph about emotional security I put in quotation marks but I’m not sure if they are correct. I wanted to let you know so you don’t think I’m purposely plagiarizing anyone.
Thanks,
Wes,
