What is the social game' Why are there rules to the behavior that one has to keep with people from a different culture' The thing is, no matter how obvious we think something is, there are always different interpretations that people can have, and most of the times these interpretations depend on culture. This is why there are rules, and there has to be rules for us to understand each other, because even if we speak the same language, cultural differences will never fade away. The tale made me realize of the existence of these differences even more. I saw that something I would like could also be considered bad, and I saw the goodness and the positive sides of thing I didn’t like. I was probably influenced by what I have learned to be good and bad. I considered freedom to do what you like and to be who you want to be to be good, and the “no rich no poor” country I considered to be a communist one, a concept that everyone has told me to be wrong. So what does the Ecuadorian culture think about these 5 basic problems of society' Do we all in the same country give the same importance to these things' Regarding the first aspect which is identity, I believe we think the same thing that Satu’s daughter said. I like to think that I am who I chose to be and that the friends I hang out with or my family can’t change what I will or will not decide to do. Hierarchy I think is something of outmost important in Ecuador. It is not like the country described in the book where everyone is at the same level and people treat each other like equals. I think the Ecuadorian society is very hierarchical and people are judged by how much money they have and by their studies to instead of judging them by the fact that they are human beings. It is true however that the power distance is reduced as one climbs the social ladder. The lowest employees like to have the most exaggerated respect with their bosses, while these latter can be friends and don’t worry so much about respect with their own bosses. I don’t think Ecuadorians think about Truth a lot, at least not the one with the capital T. self discipline is a personal quality that can be attained by choice and effort; it is not a matter of culture. We as Ecuadorians tend to have a little uncertainty avoidance and are not so open to other cultures. We do not trust Ecuadorians, we do not like Chinese, we want to take advantage of Americans, and there is some sort of resentment towards Peruvian. We are not however as rude as the country that Ampat’s son described, once we get used to someone we tend to be friendly. And finally virtue, I think our culture doesn’t give this aspect a lot of thought. We have the tendency to be very Short-Term oriented and we are a culture that sadly prefers to buy a seven hundred dollar cell phone instead of investing in our business or thinking in the future. Poorer people know the true meaning of hard work because they can’t afford all the luxuries that rich people have, but they still lack a long term orientation and spend any money that is left in their pocket. These readings make me sit down and think about Ecuadorian culture more that I have done before. If it is as deep as it looks like, maybe all the cultures have more meaning than we think of, right'
