Kevin Hoagland AP HISTORY 1/25/09 PHAEDRUS 1 Events before Speeches Phaedrus has just come from the home of Lysias, son of Cephalus, where Lysias has given a speech on love. Socrates, says that he is sick with passion for hearing speeches. Socrates tries to convince Phaedrus to repeat the speech of Lysias that he has just heard. Phaedrus makes several excuses but Socrates knows that Phaedrus has a copy of the speech with him. Phaedrus gives in and reads the speech Lysia’s Speech B. Friendship with a non-lover is objectivity and prudence. C. He says that it is best to give your favor to one who can best return it, rather than one who needs it most. He concludes by stating that he thinks the speech is long enough. Socrates First Speech A. He begins by stating all men want beauty some are in love and others aren’t B. He then says one will become or want a desire to turn the boy into something he wants instead of what is best for theboy. This will stop the boy’s mind and body from growing. C. The lover will make the boy take a family and mature. The non lover will not do any of this. D. The non lover is ruled by judgment rather than desire for pleasure. Socrates Second Speech A. He begins by shortly proving the immortality of the soul B. Then goes on talking about the madness of love. C. Talks about the myth of the chariot D. he concludes with a lover’s friendship is divine.
