The_Look

What’s wrong with the way I look' You go to the mall to go shopping then later on you go home and feel great about what you bought. Ok that’s great, but that’s not we will be talking about. So your at the mall and enter one of the best fashion stores wishing to work there, so you decide to apply but you don’t get accepted and u stay wondering why' It’s all because you don’t have “the look”. Well that a disappointment. This happens to many people especially these days since looks really matter. But should it matter' What’s wrong with looking the way we look' Well Marshal Cohen has an argument about this; Cohen is a senior industry analyst with the NPD Group, a market research firm. He thinks having “the look” is fine. Saying that it doesn’t hurt anyone in anyway. His thoughts were “In today’s competitive retail environment, the methods have changed for capturing the consumer’s awareness of your brand. Being able to find a brand enhancer, or what I call a walking billboard, is critical. I disagree with Cohen’s saying because people should be treated equal meaning we should have equal opportunities, it affects others and their self-esteem, and because of discrimination. So why do I disagree with Cohen saying that having the look is wrong' Well one of the main reasons is because people are not treated equal and we all should have equal opportunities. You go to a fashion store and first thing you see is so-called perfect models walking around working at just looking good at the store. Well why not give a chance to a girl with glasses or braces. What’s wrong with looking a bit different' No one should be treated different by the way they look. I have searched and saw the true rules for to become a clothing store associate, they are: be outgoing and have a friendly personality, be patience, cash handling experience, and having to be able to carry heavy boxes. I don’t see anything talking about how you should look. It simple isn’t fair for anyone. I once was told to work at a certain store; someone came up to me and told me if I would love to work as a model of clothing. I said no and walked away, but I watched the guy ask a few certain people and I could tell by the way he looked at them, as if we were walking mannequin dolls. Now what a disappointment that is. Not only it isn’t fair, but also some people get hurt easily and start having a low self-esteem. When you get rejected you obviously feel a bit down and sad, there isn’t anything quite good about rejection. When you do something its because you want to unless your a child then that’s a different story. But we are talking about getting a job at a clothing store. Another reason why I disagree with Cohen’s argument is because it affects others and their self-esteem. Imagine a teen girl wanting to become a model has the confidents to try out, but next thing you know she dint even make into the competition at all because of her messy puffy hair and nerdy look. She is obviously going to feel a bit down and hurt really badly. It’s about the same story when it comes to getting hired and getting denied. People with low self-esteem are less motivated than people with high self-esteem to improve a negative mood, even when they are offered an activity that will change their frame of mind, a team of American and Canadian psychologists has found. The managers at the clothing stores should think about others for a moment, if you want people to buy things from your store then you might as well not hurt peoples feelings then things start to blur out everywhere about people working in a certain store aren’t friendly and etc…that’s were the consequences come about loosing costumers. Another reason that goes to far when it comes to “the look” is discrimination. Cohen thought that “the look” had nothing to do with being racist, oh but it does, and not only that many other things too. That’s were discrimination comes and makes me disagree even more. If you're hiring by looks, then you can run into problems of race discrimination, national origin discrimination, gender discrimination, age discrimination and even disability discrimination,'' said Olophius Perry, director of the Los Angeles office of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which has accused several companies of practicing race and age discrimination by favoring good-looking young white people in their hiring. For example, an employer cannot refuse to hire you simply because you are over age 50, are Mexican or are pregnant. Also, an employer cannot try to "get even" with you or "retaliate" against you by treating you unfairly or firing you if you complain about illegal discrimination. The people that worked in the stock room, where nobody sees them, were mostly Asian American, Filipino. Why is that' Who says the all American image is all white' That is not fair and not legal. Companies like Abercrombie need to be reminded what being American is all about. Cohen’s argument is that “the look” has nothing to worry about that is doesn’t hurt anyone in anyway. But in reality it does and maybe he might not notice but it’s obvious that other people like the workers and even the customers. In my opinion I disagree with Cohen because people should have equal opportunities, it affects others self-esteem, and because of discrimination. This is no joke it is very serious. Who wants to be humiliated, hurt or made looked bad' Everyone should be treated equal; there is no certain way an all-American looks like. Writen by Alexandra W
