In the novel ‘The kite runner’ is shows that redemption is only achievable when people take accountability for their actions, through positive and courageous deeds. Baba and Amir are two of the three main characters in ‘the kite runner’ and they both have a lot of guilt they need to overcome. Baba starts off with guilt when he has a secret affair with Hassan’s mother, Amir runs away from his guilt of Hassan’s raping that he witnessed, but then Baba finally moves on from his guilt however Amir still remains a prisoner. By the end of the novel both Baba and Amir finally find true redemption and happiness within themselves. Baba is Amirs father and Hassan’s biological father. He is a pushtan and very powerful, rich, determined and independent. In the novel we find out that Baba has had a secret affair with Hassan’s mother after Baba’s wife died during the birth of amir. This is the first step of guilt Baba has. After the birth of Hassan, Ali takes Hassan in as his very own child. While in the mean time Baba gave Ali and Hassan a roof to live under and gave both Hassan and Ali a job as Baba’s and Amir’s servants. Baba feels as though this is him redeeming himself but however he is not quite redeemed from all his actions that he has made in his life. Amir struggles to redeem himself and tries to run away from his guilt. Amir doesn’t get a lot of attention off his father Baba so Amir writes stories and talks to his best friend Hassan who is a hazara. Amir was just a young boy when he witnesses his servant/ best friend Hassan getting raped by the neighbourhood bully. This is a major turning point in Amirs life and he struggles to come to terms with Hassan’s rape and tries to ignore what had happened, so he just runs away from it and pretends that he never saw it and nothing ever happened. He wants Hassan to go away and by doing so Amir hides his birthday money and watch under Hassan’s pillow and blames Hassan for the sin of stealing. This shows Amir is to scared and selfless to overcome his guilt and redeem himself. Baba starts the redeem himself and moves forward by building an orphanage in the neighbourhood. He does this to try to hide the fact that he had a secret affair with Hassan’s mother. Baba and Amir leave Afghanistan to live in America, he goes from having wealth and a position of power to working in a low paying job and living modestly. By moving to America and Baba being diagnosed with cancer it brings Baba and Amir the close relationship they have longed for that they didn’t/ couldn’t have in Afghanistan.
