Task two These are a couple of poems I wrote for my english class, the first one is in the perspective of Elizabeth as John tells her about his affair, and the other is John's perspective on the whole matter. Elizabeth: I remember that day it was the coldest of seasons When he came to me and confessed his sins In my mind I tried only to reason But my lips didn't know where to begin I remember his face as he recited the story All full of anguish and saddness and guilt I remember his eyes trying hard to ignore me As my fists clinched tighter onto my quilt I remember him searching my face for altercation My eyes cast steadfastly upon the floor I remember my heart was full of refutation As he began his slow and steady walk towards the door Oh John my love my dearest love Why is it you chose to betray me I imagine her touch as gentle as a dove her laugh all full of wicked glee And dear God I still forgive this man For in my heart I love him nonetheless I know all he needs is Your gentle hand To guide him and offer Your forgiveness John: Fallen to the charm of that wicked beauty I feel the most terrible of guilts now I try my best to go about my duty But to wife and God I have broken my vow My God will you ever forgive this sinner such a wicked deed I find myself afraid of prayer of church of God so high Yet I still turn to heaven in my hour of need All be it with a great and sorrowful sigh For how oh God could you forgive this pitiful unholy fool Who is so overcome by the horror of sin It blackens my soul in a thick unwanted pool And seems to have no beginning nor any end And what of my wife so fair and nonjudgemental She speaks so softly to me and in turn I yell I try not to be harsh but it's so hard to be gentle I feel more guilt as I fall deeper into hell I who waits endless days for a sign of absolution For my love no... LUST and unforgotten sin I who's wife is now to hang what a cruel retribution And now it seems my remorse will never end. | Salem With TrialsIt was 1692, in Salem Village that the abhorrence beganA time of pandemonium and darkness that swept across the landA village of pure jealousy, economic loss, and strifeWhere 19 innocent men and women had an end put to their lifeA cold winter, young girls experienced turbulent fitsFrightened and confused, they claimed they were bewitchedThe girls blamed their affliction on the social outcasts of their townAnd suspicion of the Satan’s witchcraft circulated all aroundMary Easty was 58 years old, a wife and mother of sevenWhen she had her kind soul taken away, too early to go to heavenRespected and religious, everyone was shocked when she was accusedBut perhaps it was envy, for they coveted the costly land she’d loseSo on April 22nd, Mary was then taken to examination in courtShe remained calm and respectful, denying witchcraft of any sort“I will say it, if it was my last, I am clear of this sin”Her eyes quivering with tears, revealing her fear from withinShe was sentenced to prison, the court disregarding her pleasBut after a few grisly days, she was once again releasedBut the young girls were dedicated to argue, debate, and fightClaiming that Mary’s apparition strangles them in the nightIt was at midnight, after two days of certainty that she was freeThe marshall came into Mary’s house and seized her away from her familyThrown back into prison, and laden with chainsShe was condemned to death, her short-lived freedom in vainShe was carted to Gallows Hill, a barren and arid slopeLike the corpse of death itself, deprived of all hopeA shadowy silhouette, anticipating its preyPrepared to pounce, and steal guiltless lives awayPreceding her execution, she spoke her final goodbyesTo her husband, her children, while everyone present criedFor her parting words were as affectionate and religious as could beBecause, never again, will words be spoken by Mary EastyThe noose clutched her neck, she held her head lowTears glided down her cheeks, one last time before she’d goShe prayed to her God, softly and subdued she said“If it be possible, no more innocent blood be shed” | Task Three The Scarlet letter The scarlet letter was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The story is about, a young woman, Hester Prynne, is led from the town prison with her infant daughter, Pearl, in her arms and the scarlet letter “A” on her breast. A man in the crowd tells an elderly onlooker that Hester is being punished for adultery. Hester’s husband, a scholar much older than she is, sent her ahead to America, but he never arrived in Boston. The consensus is that he has been lost at sea. While waiting for her husband, Hester has apparently had an affair, as she has given birth to a child. She will not reveal her lover’s identity, however, and the scarlet letter, along with her public shaming, is her punishment for her sin and her secrecy. On this day Hester is led to the town scaffold and harangued by the town fathers, but she again refuses to identify her child’s father. As Hester looks out over the crowd, she notices a small, misshapen man and recognizes him as her long-lost husband, who has been presumed lost at sea. When the husband sees Hester's shame, he asks a man in the crowd about her and is told the story of his wife's adultery. He angrily exclaims that the child's father, the partner in the adulterous act, should also be punished and vows to find the man. He chooses a new name — Roger Chillingworth — to aid him in his plan. Following her release from prison, Hester settles in a cottage at the edge of town and earns a meager living with her needlework. Rumors soon spread that the church members suggest Pearl be taken away from Hester, but with the help of Arthur Dimmesdale, the mother and daughter manage to stay together. Dimmesdale dies later on in the text as he exposes a scarlet letter seared into the flesh of his chest Chillingworth also dies a year later. Hester and Pearl leave Boston, and no one knows what has happened to them. Many years later, Hester returns alone, still wearing the scarlet letter, to live in her old cottage and resume her charitable work. She receives occasional letters from Pearl, who has married a European aristocrat and established a family of her own. When Hester dies, she is buried next to Dimmesdale. The two share a single tombstone, which bears a scarlet “A.” The scarlet letter is very similar to the crucible, they both cover sin, lust, evil and punishment. They both relate to the salem witch trials yet the scarlet letter focuses on adultery while the crucible is based on witch craft. The people in the two stories live in a puritan society. Task Four. Girl at centre of St Kilda photo scandal alleges affair with Nixon Caroline Wilson Herald Sun February 19, 2011 HIGH-PROFILE player manager Ricky Nixon is facing allegations he had sexual relations with the 17-year-old girl at the centre of the St Kilda online photograph scandal. Speaking last night to The Saturday Age, the former Frankston school girl said the affair had begun in recent weeks. The girl, who was embroiled in the scandal which saw nude and semi-nude photographs of St Kilda footballers placed on the internet, was last month placed in accommodation paid for by St Kilda. Nixon manages St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt - a key subject in the internet controversy - and Sam Gilbert who has admitted having sex with the girl. AFL spokesman Brian Walsh last night refused to comment on the allegations. St Kilda CEO Michael Nettlefold and AFL boss Andrew Demetriou did not return calls last night. The girl, who briefly visited Etihad Stadium last night during St Kilda's NAB Cup games, said she had provided tapes and spoken to a Herald-Sun journalist about her relationship with Nixon and that News Limited had placed her in an apartment opposite the newspaper's Southbank headquarters two days ago. ''We started texting each other a lot and seeing each other a lot after January 21 when I had made the settlement with St Kilda,'' she told The Saturday Age. ''He sent me a text saying he hoped I could get on with my life.'' When asked whether the two had been having an affair she replied: ''Yes. This might sound stupid but I didn't know he was married.'' Nixon told The Age earlier this month that he had been attempting to help the girl with employment prospects. Last year she became the centre of an AFL and Victoria police investigation when she said she had fallen pregnant to a St Kilda footballer, since miscarrying. Nixon could not be contacted by The Saturday Age last night. St Kilda schoolgirl says Ricky Nixon asked her to lie amid sex scandal Anthony Dowsley Herald Sun March 06, 2011 6:45PM In an evening of drama, speculation also emerged Nixon would step down as a player agent and seek professional help. Flying Start - the management company run by Nixon - has confirmed that he will not be attending their offices at Etihad Stadium today. Minutes after Nixon arrived at Melbourne Airport, after nearly two weeks in hiding overseas, the 17-year-old girl at the centre of the scandal unleashed a fresh wave of allegations on Channel 9. She claimed Nixon emailed her after the Herald Sun broke the scandal and tried to convince her to retract her allegations so they could be "together". As Nixon left the airport through a side entrance, the girl revealed an email she alleges was from Nixon urging her to deny they had sex or consumed drugs together. * He is also alleged to have told the teen she could have "amazing sex'', according to emails the girl claims he sent her. And the girl, 17, has admitted lying about being pregnant. In an email, which she claims Nixon sent after the Herald Sun story about their "inappropriate dealings" on February 19, Nixon allegedly talks about reigniting their relationship and urges her to issue a statement denying they had sex. In it he allegedly tells her to say: "I want to clear the air about what happened that night in my hotel room. "I want to put on the record that there was no sex and there was no drug taking. When I told people that I'd been having sex with him I never dreamt that it would get the coverage that it has. I then put together a video that gives the impression that we had sex and drugs." Channel 9's 60 Minutes identified her, but the Herald Sun has chosen not to. In text messages Nixon also allegedly wrote: "We will need to plan our relationship carefully but I will definately (sic) give it a go so long as we don't film or tape each other and u (sic) have amazing sex at least twice a day." And: "Your choice if you don't do it then not only will there be no future for us but you will have 100s of people associated with me who will want revenge on u (sic) and that will be for the rest of your life." Late last night the Herald Sun learned Nixon was vacillating and might not want to step down as a player manager. It was reported on Nine News last night Nixon would enter a clinic for professional help for "personal problems". A close associate of Nixon said last night the player manager had assessed his future while in London and, despite having "ups and downs", was in good spirits. The girl, who at the weekend was staying at a five-star Melbourne hotel, is not permitted to speak publicly for a week under her contract with Channel 9. It is understood she was paid a five-figure sum for last night's interview. The Herald Sun witnessed phone calls and texts from Nixon to the girl in the days after he was questioned by the newspaper about the nature of his relationship with her. Legal experts say he could face serious charges if he is found to have had a sexual relationship with the teen.
