The Benefits of Online Education verses Traditional Education Deborah A. Williams ENG121: English Composition I Instructor: Kathy Knecht Date Submitted The Benefits of Online Education verses Traditional Education There is a new option for quality education. Online education is rapidly becoming the adult student way of earning a Bachelor or Master degree (Coleman, S.) in the majority of all fields of careers. According to the online magazine, Wide World Learning, there are over 4 millions students enrolled for a cyber classroom as of August 15, 2005 and growing at a rate of 30%. Conveniences and unlimited contact with others, both national and around the world students and teachers, are two of the reasons for this trend rapid growth. There are still quite of few students that prefer to utilize the face-to-face interactions with their professor and classmates. Jay Liebowitz’s (Camps Corner) studies found that students who have physical interactions in the classroom settings learn how to work with others better than the students do educated through the online classroom. No matter which classroom you choose to attend, the need for higher education is raising among older adults. Both ways of education are experiencing students of both male and female, all ages, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, looking to continue or just starting their education after years of non-involvement with learning a career. Most reasoning for the return is the change in the economical and career market. The need for more education is because of the change of labor force, and the need for a two-income household. Instead of manual labor, there is a demand on employees to do more work with computers. A survey (Croix, W.) reveled the average student of the traditional classroom is” 35 year old, white, married women with families and active community involvement”. However, the online classroom, according to the studies of Burr (Coleman, S.), is made up of men and women over 50 years of age and women. Les Burr, deputy director of student services at Charles Sturt University, men and woman of rural and urban areas are finding that using the cyber classroom to achieve the goal of higher education very convenient. The campus of today has made many changes to the classroom of old. Generally, the old classrooms of universities where set up as the high school were, but modern campus is more learners friendly. There are changes in the classroom where the chairs are set around the instructor that will leave to discussion type learning instead of lecture learning (Croix, W.). Technical, and computer, students now find classrooms as a lab equipped with computers and other “electric toys” to aid with learning for the adult student. In addition to these changes, when adult students enter the classroom they find many more students of similar age group instead of the young adult students right out of high school like 20 years ago. This put older students comfortable and something in common with fellow students. Older students have a feeling that if they need help with a subject, other student would be more inclined to help them at the same level that they are. The last benefit of on campus learning is the personal relationships that are develop that generally last over a lifetime (Campus Corner). Fellow students and instructors develop relationships that follow students after they leave the institution to the point that there is a reunion events and small get together enjoy between them. Online classes offer the convenience of learning at any time, or place that is easy for the adult student (Coleman, S.). Working adult and parents can pursue an education at anytime of the day without interfering with any of commitments they have in their lifestyle. Parents can attend to their children while attending classes making it possible to achieve their education goals. Working students can find time during the day, or night also to achieve their educational goals even if they enjoy traveling. One benefit for online learning that traditional classroom does not always offer is meeting other students from all over the world. Even though traditional college campuses have a wide range of ethnic diversity, online learning involves a wider range of ethnic diversity. A university here in America can teach a student in Japan with ease. Students will be able to conversant and asset their learning material in their own language. Another benefit is that students can all contribute to course work more because they do not feel as if one student is contributing more. It also offers an instructor a better vision of a student that may not understand the material. Instructors can monitor each student in a cyber classroom as if they were in a small classroom instead of a large traditional class. They can develop a more personal relationship with each student through email and discussion of each course. Finally, and maybe more compelling, financially online education is less expensive than the traditional institution (Coleman, S.). Tuition discounts rage from 33% to 50% for instructors and spouses as well as students. It is just a matter of each student’s preference. Some work better at their own pace as they deal with day-to-day activities, while others need the face-to-face interactions to achieve their educational aspirations. Even though e-learning is growing in popularity, but on campus learning will never lose its preference a venue for higher education. You chose which way suits your needs. The chosen method effectively compares or contrasts the selected subjects in a balanced, organized manner that is easy to read and understand.(0.9 / 1.5) Does this assignment have an introduction that includes a succinct thesis statement'AcceptableThe introduction and/or thesis statement in this essay would benefit from further attention. An introduction paragraph will introduce the topic but will not start discussing the "meat" (main points) of the topic. An introduction serves to introduce the topic to your reader, state the importance/interest of the topic, and state the thesis. In addition, remember that your thesis is to be a one sentence summary of your paper. For example: "Pollution has many negative effects, including global warming as well as depleting our ozone layer and natural resources."
