The Beast Many books have used the art of symbols to express certain feelings and emotions in discreet ways to represent and explain another procedure or purpose from the story. What is symbolism' "The practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing symbolic meanings or significance to objects, events, or relationships" (Dictionary.com). In the book Lord of The Flies by William Golding the beast starts as a symbol of fear, it later becomes a representation of man’s true nature, the evil inside people, and their capacity to commit acts of violence and savagery. In Lord of The Flies by William Golding the extreme unusual situation on the island leads the boys to fear and terror of the beast. The beast is introduced by Piggy who mentions the words of a littlun, ‘‘He says he saw the beastie, the snake thing, and will it come back tonight...he says in the morning it turned them into things like ropes in the trees and hung in the branches.’’ (golding 36). The first idea of the beast was first introduced to the novel by the littluns ones as an illustration of their fear. The littluns are certainly scared but, they had no way to manifest their fear, and this is the reason why their subconsciously created the “beast”. Another thing the kids mention in the book, “‘What would a beast eat'" "Pig.’ ‘We eat pig.’ ‘Piggy!”’ The boys are still fearful of the beastie roaming the island.’’’ (Golding 83). In this quote the kids show how afraid they still are from the beast by worrying about what the beast eats. These quotes clearly show how the kids are terrified of the beast roaming the island even though they know it is only in their imagination. Later on in the book the beast becomes the representation of man’s true nature and violent and savage conducts. In chapter four Jack finally manages to kill a pig “kill the pig. Cut her throat’’’ (Golding 75). These words used to describe the violent and savage death of the pig describe the kids true human nature which has transformed them into primitive beings. The boys cannot longer control themselves and the violence they apply. Another things is that the beast signifies the true human nature for survival and their primitive instincts. Another thing said is, “‘He tried to convey the compulsion to track down and kill that was swallowing him up”’ (Golding 51). Jack's transformation from civilized bully to savage killer has begun Jack’s obsession to kill a pig becomes bigger and bigger every day which shows what humans a truly capable of doing. In The Lord of The Flies the beast makes human’s true nature stand out as a display of violence and savagery. The beast has the power to bring out the worst out of every single one of the kids “See' See' That's what you'll get! I meant that! There isn't a tribe for you any more! The conch is gone. —’ He ran forward, stooping. ‘I'm Chief!’ (Golding 81). Jack is so blinded by hatred that he does not realize the gravity of his actions which are brutal, inhumane and evil. Jack does not realize a person is dead because of his actions; he cares and desires to be the only one in power thus letting the evil inside him taking control. By the end of the book "Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man's heart, and the fall through the air of a true, wise friend called Piggy." (Golding 202). by the end of the book only Sameric, and Piggy prevail royal to Ralph as a consequence they also remain civilized and with good judgment of what is right and wrong, in this quote Ralph particularly mentions “the end of innocence, and the darkness in man’s heart” because he realizes that that is exactly what has happened to almost all the boys who became savages. He also says this because until now he had not known who his real friend was. This is because he was blinded by superficiality. In Lord of the flies the beast reveals the evil side of the kids and their capacity to do violent and unpleasant things simply because they have the power to do so and because they wish to do so, therefore having a great impact in the kids behavior. In Lord of The Flies, William Golding does so much more than relate an interesting anecdote. In this book, William Golding is able to explore in depth the impact of fear and how it makes people act. Other themes such as humans true nature reveal how people can be reduced into savagery in an atmosphere of chaos, and how evil inside people can make them potentially be brought down from civilization to savagery, order to chaos, good to evil.
