Doyle 1 AJ Doyle Linda Reed English IV 16 November, 2009 The Apocalypse For thousands of years, mankind has been trying to produce evidence to support their claim that they know how the world is going to end. Thousands of the smartest minds on the earth, throughout time have produced different types of theories and solutions, but nobody knows which one will actually come true. There is, as well as an overpowering feeling, but a humbling feeling knowing the exact date you're going to die. Whether it be an ancient calendar, a mega-catastrophe, or even a concept in the Bible itself, the world still wonders how it'll all end. As one thinks of these solutions, they have to think about one more possibility, “What if the world doesn't end, and all this is, the theories, the evidence, are fabricated'” The number one theory of the ending of mankind if the “Four Horseman of the Apocalypse” that is stated in a concept in the New Testament of the Bible. These 4 horsemen are predicted to ride during an apocalyptic period with the worst conditions imaginable, which are war, weather changes, and last, but certainly not least, economic disasters. The horseman are referred to as “Famine”, “Death”, “War”, and “Conquest”, and they are part of an apocalyptic vision in which God calls upon them to destroy the populations of the world, resulting in the genocide of the Earth, or, Armageddon. Many people, however believe this to just be prophecy and say that it will not come true, believing that nothing is going to happen at all, in most cases. This theory begs the question, has this ever happened Doyle 2 before with another type of people' Did they get so out of control that God sent the four horseman down to wipe out the other race' A second possibility that is said to lead up to the end of all mankind is another mega-catastrophe, such as like what happened to the dinosaurs hundreds of millions ago. If this were to happen and it hit the earth (assuming it is, in fact an asteroid), depending on where it would hit, nothing would survive. If it hit in one of the major oceans (Pacific, Atlantic, etc), it would flash-boil millions of gallons of seawater, killing all the marine life that lives there. If it hit land, however, there would be a major chance of it creating a cloud of dust so thick and hot, that it would cover the entire atmosphere of the Earth, and nothing would be able to survive, because it'd launch the earth into a global ice age. This theory is a bit far fetched, considering the amount of technology the Earth has, and will have from now until that day. When one thinks of the year “2012”, they no doubt think somewhere in their mind about the most common and most talked about theory out there. The ancient Mayans had a special system of calendars that make large cycles with a large amount of days on them. These calendars range back to the 6th century B.C and are still believed to predict the end of the world. Even though the calendar does end on December 21, 2012 does not mean that it will be the end of the world. The date the Mayans picked out, or foresaw could just mean that there is a new age of rebirth in order for the Earth, or a renaissance. Nobody can figure out why they saw or maybe even said that 12/21/12 as the day, and evidence can't either. In conclusion, there are many different theories out there to how Armageddon will come about, but the most brilliant of people are collecting evidence, information, or whatever they can to support their own theories. Whether it be a book, a calendar, or a mega-catastrophe, the world will still be questioning up until the day comes, whether or not they can go about living peacefully. Doyle 3 Works Cited
