Roger tries stealing and is taught a lesson in morality. The lesson this story portrayed was doing the right thing when no one is looking. A person who is raised like roger has a tendency to only do the right thing when someone is watching. The author used setting to show the theme. “‘It was about eleven o’clock at night and she was alone” (page 172). Setting also sets a meaning of the story by getting the reader to know that there is nobody around to see the boy steal the pocketbook. This part of the setting shows how there is nobody watching. “If I turn you loose will you run.’ Asked the women” (Page 173). Roger answered yes, and failed the test once more, the assessment of ethics. When no one was looking she offered to let him loose if he lied and ran he could have gotten away with it. Roger should have said yes and stayed; no one was looking and it was the right thing to do. The setting gives a situation of where the theme takes effect. “The door was open.” (Page 174). He could make a dash for it down the hall. The woman was in another room and the door was open Roger could of ran with out difficulty. But Roger chose to do the right thing. The pocket book was out in the open. (Page 174). Roger could have stolen the pocket book but he again chose to do the right thing when no one was looking. Doing the right thing is doing it when you don’t have to. “you could have asked boy” is an example of what could have happened if he had not attempted stealing. Attempting to steal hurts yourself by complete degradation of peoples trust in you. It also hurts others to see you lie, someone they believed in and trusted. Doing wrong is harder than doing what is right. This means that if you chose a path of lies and deception, you lose more than gain and you will never gain back what is lost through lies. Doing what is right can be difficult but “you could’ve asked” is something that people must do everyday to earn the right to say they are trustworthy. This is the only way a person can be successful in life. Fate doesn’t mean you win or lose. Winning is how you act upon your lose to overcome your lose then and only then will you win. To become a true winner you must work. Losers let it happen. Winners make it happen.
