This project was designed keeping in mind of the size of the company, future potential growth as well as leveraging current stable technologies and industry practices.
Scope
During Phase I of this project BRJ along with the Bead Bar staff had establish a high-level view of the intended needs, requirements and goals for this project. The following section will provide a general overview of the information that the team provided and collected during Phase I of the discovery and assessment phase.
1. Number of Employees
a. Approximately 15 full - time employees – the full-time employees will have need to have access to the computer systems on a regular basis
b. Approximately 20 part-time employees – the 20 part-time employees will need limited access to the computer systems because their main job function is providing customer service and cash register support in the studios.
2. Current Desktop, Laptop and Server Environment – We determined that currently the Bead Bar has no Information systems available at the time of our discovery and assessment phase of the project.
3. Network Infrastructure - We determined that currently the Bead Bar has no Network infrastructure available at the time of our discovery and assessment phase of the project.
4. Corporate Presence – We determined that currently the Bead Bar has no corporate presence available to them on the internet at the time of our discovery and assessment phase.
Phases and Systems Overview
The Bead Bar systems development project involves the development of information systems, which we based upon the prior discovery and assessment phase and will be required to be performed during this phase of the project. BRJ has broken these items out into the four key areas listed below.
Computers
1. Desktop and Laptop Environment – We will purchase and deploy approximately 14 new Dell brand computers to be provided to each of the senior management team members as well as one desktop for each of the Bead Bar Studios. This rollout of desktops is designed to provide the Bead Bar with a more effective and efficient work environment for there employees
a. Operating Systems and Hardware Standards for Desktop and Laptops – we determined the need for each of these desktops to have a minimal hardware requirement that is able to run Windows XP operating system.
b. Review selected Desktop and Laptop Production OS Image – Currently Microsoft has rolled out service pack two will be part of the standard load set that will be deployed with all critical update installed. We will lockdown all systems, so that unauthorized software installations can be installed on company owned equipment.
c. Additional Requirements - In addition to these desktop requirements an additional need for the purchase of a Macintosh computer for the marketing team.
i. Review OS Service Pack levels.
ii. Review Critical Update levels.
iii. Desktop lockdown policies
2. Server and Desktop configuration and Anti-virus setup – We will install a Dell Server to act as a Windows 2003 primary domain controller, local file server, database server and application server. We will create user accounts, passwords, and setup permissions for file shares and remote access capabilities.
a. Server – Primary Domain Controller and File Server
b. Desktop and Laptops – Local LAN user configuration
c. Remote user configuration
Software
a. Commercial Software Suites -
i. Microsoft Office – All desktops and laptops should have installed Microsoft Office 2003 suite, which will provide the staff with all the useful applications such as MS Word for word-processing, MS Excel for spreadsheets and MS PowerPoint for presentations.
ii. Norton Anti-Virus – All desktops and laptops should have installed and configured anti-virus software.
b. Customer or in-house software applications and databases
i. Oracle 9i – we determined that Oracle 9i would be installed in the corporate office. BRJ consulting with install, design and build an oracle 9i database. This centralized database software will serve the multiple locations of the Bead Bar sufficiently while maintaining one single database instance within the Bead Bar corporate file server.
Networking
a. LAN – We recommended installing a network infrastructure using the star topology. The star topology is one of the most common network topologies found in most offices today. The star topology has become a very popular network topology in contrast to the other types of topologies that were considered for this project. The advantages of this topology are its ease to manage, troubleshot, ease of configuration as well as will expand, as the company needs to expand. See figure 1 below that illustrates a simple star network.
