Texting and Its effects on Teens Texting and the affects it has on teens is a big issue that we have in America. Text messaging, or texting, is a trend that lets you send instant messages to another person from your phone to their home or cellular phone. It is an easy way to tell someone something if you are unable to call them. Teens also say texting is more comfortable than talking on the phone because it is quick and private (WOAI). I can agree with teens on this because I don't know what I would do without texting. I don't get to see all my friends everyday ,and I don't have time to call them all, so texting really helps me stay in touch. Even though texting is the new trend, it can cause many problem for teens like a distraction in school that can cause falling grades. In addition to that, teens can get themselves in a serious accident or in trouble with the law. In today's age of technology texting is the new thing to do. Texting is the most popular way to communicate with your peers. When you text it helps communicate with people that are a long distance from you or if you don't have time to call them. If you are an adolescent and don't text it may cause serious issues to your social life, because it seems like everyone is texting. What they don't realize is what it can do to your future.

In 2008 Verizon did a study that showed the American teenager sent and received an average of 2,272 text messages, that is almost 80 messages a day (Hafner). With teens texting that much I don't see how they make time for anything else. Studies show that teens text almost once every minute. This many texts can causes a lack of concentration that cause low or failing grades. . Greg Hardesty, a reporter in Lake Forest, Calif., said that late last year his 13-year-old daughter, Reina, racked up 14,528 texts in one month. She would keep the phone on after going to bed. Mr. Hardesty wrote a column about Reina’s texting in his newspaper hoping to educate people about obsessive text usage. Finally, when her grades fell , her parents confiscated the phone. With low or falling grades teens don't have a good opportunities in the future and the Hardesty knew that. They won't be able to get a good job and make money to live comfortable in life. After they took the phone their daughters grades started to go back up. this shows you when kind of distraction texting can cause. Another issue with teens and texting are the health issues and other health concerns. One of the greatest concern is texting while driving. while you are driving it is imperative that you watch the road at all times. When someone is texting it draws your attention away from the road which can cause an accident. Information wasn't available about car accidents and if texting caused them until recently. In 2007 and 2008 Edgar Snyder and associates was done to see how greatly cell phone calls and texting contribute to car crashes. It said that there are 80,000 people using cell phones at any given time. With distracted driving killing nearly 6,000 Americans in the same year, it's no mystery that cell phone use is risky for drivers (Snyder). The study showed that cell phone usage can slow the reaction time as slow as a 70 year old. 34 percent of teens even admit it texting while driving and 48 percent say they have been in a car when the driver was texting. It seems like they learn it from other teens or adults. Each year, 21% of fatal car crashes involving teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 were the result of cell phone usage. This result has been expected to grow as much as 4% every year. This isn't good because of the dangers and accidents it will cause. There are also some legal problems you might have if you are texting while driving. Despite the risks, the majority of teen drivers ignore cell phone driving restrictions. Some state have even banned cell phone usage and driving. My father used to live in Arizona and whenever we talked he would hang up if he was driving, so he didn't get a ticket. He used to talk and joke about it all the time, but cell phone usage while driving, really is a serious issue. There are eight states and the Virgin Islands that prohibit all drivers from using handheld cell phones while driving. There are even, 30 states, D.C. and Guam, that ban text messaging for all drivers. 11 of these laws were enacted in 2010..Except for Maryland, all laws are heavily enforcement and a officer may cite a driver for using a handheld cell phone without any other traffic offense taking place. It has gotten so dangerous that even the federal government has made laws against all cell phone usage.

As of January 26, 2010, all commercial vehicle drivers in the United States are banned from text messaging and using handheld cell phones while driving (Governors Highway Safety Association). This goes to show you that driving and using your cell phone has become very dangerous. In conclusion, even though texting is the new teenage trend, or thing to do, it can make a negative impact on teen lives. In order for it to be a positive, we as a society have to teach teens when and how to use our cell phones correctly. Even if, we have to learn to use them correctly ourselves. We have to show teen that texting has a time, place, and purpose. Cell phones are a tool for communication and if a teen is constantly on the phone and not attending to school work, their grades will drop. All these things will affect the future of teens and we have to make sure it is for the better.
