Technology Back Tracking Human Development The average American citizen spends eleven hours a day under the influence of the same harmful substance every single day. Not many would guess that the harmful substance controlling mankind is technology. Technology is damaging our Earth, as well as our health, and has succeeded in making our lives more complex. Our Earth, the planet we call home, is a ticking-time bomb ready to give out at any moment. With the introduction of technology in society, land has to be cleared in order to harvest raw material for technological advancement and to build plants to make technology. The effects of this land being unnecessarily cleared are clearly marked by the depleting ozone layer. How else is technology eating our ozone layer' Vehicles emit pollution; the pollution is rising up into the sky and ripping what’s left of our barrier, to keep the harmful UV rays out, into pieces. Al Gore would tell you, that our destroyed ozone layer is the main cause of Global Warming. Technology in the environment is like a fire, consuming everything it touches not leaving anything to be preserved for future generations. Life is simply more complex. Ironically, wasn’t technology supposed to make life simpler' There is more to worry about with the ease of bulling by social network, picture messaging and mass text message. The suicide rate has increased to the highest it’s been in 15 years since the birth of Facebook. Our economy in America has also been documented as a cause for the high suicide rates. With jobs being outsourced, and a terrible economy; America cannot afford to lose any jobs to computers. Life can’t become simpler with Americans not being able to find jobs. The unemployment rate is the highest it’s been since the great depression. Technology is at the core of many health problems that didn’t exist or were much less severe in other times. Childhood obesity has skyrocketed since 2001 when “Halo” and “Call of Duty” came out, these games are two of the most purchased games in history. There is a new disorder directly created by too much technology, “lack of personality disorder.” Behavioral problems in children have nearly tripled since the widespread availability of cartoons. Our upcoming generations don’t have enough face to face interaction to develop properly. Laziness has been a much more frequent symptom of mental problems. Honestly, who would spend time actually reading and educating themselves when answers to almost every question fit in your pocket. Technology is changing life in a negative way, making life harder for most people, damaging our mother earth, and messing with our minds. Technology is making our lives harder not easier. Our Earth is suffering for our entertainment. Children are simply becoming bigger brats. The perfect technology-induced Utopia promised by “The Jetsons” is clearly just a dream.
