Team-Building Exercise 1 Team-Building Exercise for Conflict Resolution Chariti Luttrell Business 610 Organizational Behavior Instructor Kathryn King-Metters October 24, 2011 Team-Building Exercise 2 Team-Building Exercise for Conflict Resolution Conflict resolution exercises in a team resolves negative conflict as well as benefits the team. “A common goal of the team is to form a vision or mission statements between their peers” (Easy in Management, (2009), para.1) which will be part of the training process upon introduction into the business or organization. Once the mission statement is established, a sense of unity will be recognized among team members and a team leader can be assigned. “Working through a conflict can also help all those involved to get to the next stage of development in “self-awareness, team building, and productivity.” (Cottringer, W., (2006), para.11). It is important to not avoid conflict and provide steps in conflict management for the employee to follow to have a positive outcome. First of all, a team has many advantages over an individual because of the vast array of cultural and diverse resources. It is important for the group to pull together and establish a leader in order to brainstorm different ideas to resolve conflict in different areas such as “integrating, obliging, dominating, avoiding, and compromising.” (Kinicki, A., Kreitner, R.  (2009) p. 317). Having these problem solving skills is key to being successful so that they can become a part of day to day interactions and not be secondary. In addition, the primary goals of the company should be introduced and agreed upon by the team players by the leader. A well informed leader should know the difference between a well informed decision by the group and should not be led on by peer pressure or mindguards which are “self appointed protectors against adverse information.” (Kinicki, A., Kreitner, R.  (2009) p. 270). Groups as well as individuals are Team-Building Exercise 3 responsible for their decisions and should be well informed and trained by the business or organization. Conflict resolution has to follow certain step in order to be successful. As stated in the text by Kinicki, A., Kreitner, R.  (2009), these include the ability to incorporate the study of minority dissent. This includes the “notion that the quality of group decisions making varies across groups. The decision making effectiveness in a group is dependent on successfully accomplishing the following: 1. Developing a clear understanding of the decision situation. 2. Developing a clear understanding of the requirements for an effective choice. 3. Thoroughly and accurately assessing the positive qualities of alternative solutions. 4. Thoroughly and accurately assessing the negative qualities of alternative solutions.” (Kinicki, A., Kreitner, R.  (2009). P. 295.) All groups members in order to be successful have to satisfy all of these conditions. The next step in conflict resolution would be to form a process as to which the business or organization can conduct its conflict management when a company is having issues. This is summed up in an article by Easy in Management, (2009), which includes “(1) conduct an interview with the key stakeholders, (2) individual interview should be conducted with the existing team members (3) a team –business sessions should be initiated, (4) individual mediations should be conducted, (5) train team members in collaborative conflict- resolution and conflict management skills training, and finally (6) provide individual and group and follow up. Essential what the article states is the fact that even though most organizations maintain team efforts, often these team are not executed unless there is a need for intervention.” (Easy in Management, (2009) para.3). Team-Building Exercise 4 In the end, conflict resolution in a team building exercise resolves many issues in an organization that will either make or break a company. Of course, there is no I in team so adequate solutions to team problems and the ability to work with others is important to the survival to a business or organization. Working well with one another, coordinating, and listening provides for a positive outcome which will make it easier to reach the common goal. Keep in mind that leaders in the business world have to be“good at listening, they stay close to their colleagues, they have a good understanding of what their colleagues need to perform at a high level and they work hard to get that to them.” (Spiro, J., (2010), para. 8).
