I would contribute to a lesson given to a group of seven year old children learning to play percussion instruments by:- Supporting the teacher in preparing the classroom as directed which may involve laying out the relevant instruments, preparing any music that may be needed and also reorganising the furniture to suit the lesson. I would check all of the instruments making sure that they were all in good working order, clean and that no one could harm themselves on them. I would make sure that this done at the start of the percussion instrument lesson in order for the lesson to start on time and run as smoothly as possible. At the end of the percussion instrument lesion I would help clear away all resources, materials and equipment ensuring that everything was still in good order. I would also watch for any pupils that may be having problems in achieving the goals set by the teacher and report them as soon as possible. I would then assist the pupil to help them over there difficulty in order for them to achieve the relevant outcome that has been directed by the teacher. Other things that I would help with are to make sure that every pupil has the correct resources, materials or equipment so that no one is left out. Supporting the teacher in managing pupil’s behaviour and reporting any difficulties as appropriate is also very important. Also I would assist in any administrative roles such as photocopying and writing on an overhead projector etc. Finally I would help support the teacher by keeping records that I have been requested to and also gather any further observations, then report this information as directed by the teacher to the relevant people. It is also very important to support the pupils within the learning environment. I would help to make sure that all pupils feel safe and that they feel fully involved in the lesson in order that everyone feels included and positive within the learning environment. I would support the pupils by establishing a good relationship with them and act as a good role model to them by being aware and responding to all individual needs. I would also help explain to them what was required of them in the lesson if they were not clear on what they had to do. I would also encourage and support the pupils to work together or on their own as directed by the teacher making sure that they are safe and can access all they need to learn. Whilst the lesson was underway I would always stay aware of school policies and procedures that relate to, Safe Guarding Children, Health and Safety, Behaviour policy, and Data protection and would report any concerns to the relevant person as soon as possible In conclusion I would want to make sure that all pupils get the most out of the lesson and that all pupils have the right equipment, resources and materials to learn and develop themselves to their full potential. My role in organising, using and maintaining the learning resources, material and equipment for the percussion lesson would be to make sure that the correct resources, materials and equipment are set out before the lesson as directed by the teacher. This may include putting out the relevant percussion instruments, music stands, any sheet music that may be needed along with any paper or pencils that pupils can use to make notes with. I would make sure that work areas are clean and clear for the pupils and that any relevant seating or tabled areas are safe for the percussion lesson. I would also make sure that I had a clear inventory of all equipment, resources and materials which had been put out prior to the percussion instrument lesion and then, at the end of the lesson I would make sure that everything was accounted for and still in good working order. If an item was broken I would advise the teacher and if directed to I would source the correct kit to repair it or send it off to the relevant person to be fixed or disposed of. It is also my role to make sure that all resources, materials and equipment are put away safely and tidy. I would also assist the teacher in showing the pupils how to use the equipment in safe manner making sure that all instructions were followed. In order for me to be an effective role model for the standards of behaviour expected by pupils I must always stay calm, confident and demonstrate a united front with the teacher maintaining consistency within the classroom. By showing the pupils that the adults can work together it will have a positive effect on the whole class. I would always stay positive and relaxed. If the pupils can feel tension from the adults in the class then this would rub off and create a negative effect on the class. It is also important to follow any school behaviour polices and explain clearly how members of staff will respond to inappropriate behaviour,r therefore setting the required boundaries of the learning environment is essential. It is important that I show respect for the pupils so that they can learn to give the same respect back. By treating everyone fairly and setting the standards of social behaviour the pupils will be polite and well disciplined and therefore giving a positive impact on behaviour within the class. Strategies should always be reviewed depending on the situation and always followed through by a united front. There are several strategies and practices that I would employ to encourage pupils to behave appropriately they include:- * Consistent teaching and support will enable good behaviour in the pupils. * Making the pupils understand the schools polices so that they know exactly what is expected of them at all times whilst in the learning environment. * Make a clear list of rewards that are available to the pupil as well as l clear list of sanctions, these should be followed through by everyone in a consistent manner. * Praising pupils and encouraging them with verbal or written praise along with the use of stickers and merit points not only for academic achievement but also for good behaviour. * Observe pupils and be aware of potential bad behaviour in able stop it before it get out of control, e.g. poor concentration, excessive chatter or fidgeting. * Do not have too many rules that pupils will forget and try to work out the rules with the pupils so they can feel that they have a voice. * Know your pupils, if they have a behaviour plan ensure you follow it always feeding back anything that does not seem to be effective. * Don't just encourage students that are excelling but also those who are having to try really hard and struggling if they feel they have your support this will stop them from getting frustrated and will help to avoid disruptive behaviour. In the instance that I should witness or be informed of any bullying or violence I would react in line with the school policy quickly, calmly and at an appropriately level according the age of the pupils. It is also important to treat every case individually and to look at each pupil separately. I would make sure that that each pupil had a safe environment where they can talk freely without any interruptions or feel any pressure from their peers. I would ensure that the relevant members of staff are informed of the incident and a full report recorded as soon as possible ensuring that all reports are kept away from the students individual records and only accessible by the relevant staff members. I would reassure the pupils that the school would protect and support everyone involved but I would also make it clear that I would have to inform my senior members of staff and not keep any secrets from anyone.
