Describe How You Might Contribute To a Lesson Given To a Group Of Seven Year Old Children Learning To Play Percussion Instruments' Before the lesson starts, I would prepare the instruments ready for use. I would check to make sure that the instruments were in good condition, safe to use and aren’t likely to cause any injuries. I would also familiarise myself with the instruments, making sure I knew what they were called, and how to play them so that I could answer any of the children’s questions effectively. During the lesson, I would supervise the children and help to demonstrate how to use the instruments correctly, promoting safe use and encouraging them to listen to what the teacher is saying. I would also support children who are experiencing any difficulties and give them plenty of praise and positive encouragement. I would observe and monitor the children’s behaviour, ability and understanding during the lesson, to give feedback to the teacher of how the children are progressing. At the end of the lesson, I would check to see if the instruments were still in good condition and store them away in the correct place. What might be your role in organizing, using and maintaining the learning resources, materials and equipment' My role as a teaching assistant would be to prepare all the materials or equipment in advance, such as photocopying, setting out art materials, or preparing sports equipments for a P.E. lesson. I would check the condition of the learning resources before and after use, making sure they comply with health and safety regulations. I would familiarise myself with the uses of the equipment and be a good role model to the children, encouraging them to use equipment safely and correctly. I would ensure a clean and tidy working environment, and encourage children to return materials and equipment to the correct places and dispose of waste in a safe and tidy manner. To ensure that the classroom has all the materials and equipment the children need, I would report any shortages to the teacher and also monitor the demand for any resources to help improve the children’s learning experience. What aspects of safety would you consider' To ensure safe use of all equipment and learning resources, I would work with the teacher to determine how the learning environment should be set up to promote the safety and security of pupils. Before any activities, I would check the instructions of the equipment being used and always comply with the schools health and safety policy. I would check all the equipment to make sure it is safe to use, such as no sharp edges, or broken pieces and make sure the learning environment is safe and free of hazards. I would encourage the children to use any equipment or materials correctly and for their intended purpose and ensure that they are put away in a safe and tidy manner. I would carry out regular inspections of the resources to ensure that they are always safe for use. I would make sure that the correct safety equipment is being used for each lesson, such as landing mats for P.E, safety goggles for science and also familiarise myself with the location of first aid boxes, fire extinguishers, alarms, in case of emergencies. Describe how you act in order to be an effective role model for the standards of behaviour expected in pupils. To act as a perfect role model for pupils, it is essential to promote positive behaviour before any behavioural problems arise. Effective leadership across all the school staff will help to ensure that consistent good teaching is helping to promote good behaviour. In order to gain pupils respect, I would always encourage and influence them to achieve their full potential. I would consistently provide praise and support, show them that their ideas are valued and always listen to the children’s needs. I would encourage the children to work together, pay attention and concentrate on tasks, and ensure they follow the school rules at all times. By getting the children involved with the school rules, means they are more likely to follow and understand them. What strategies might you employ to encourage pupils to behave appropriately' Describe how you might react to incidents of bullying and violence. To encourage pupils to behave appropriately, I would get them involved with making the rules as they are often more responsive to rules they helped create. I would always encourage good standards of behaviour at all times, and reward pupils for good behaviour. I would always make it clear that bullying will not be tolerated. However, if it does occur, I would provide a secure environment in which pupils can confidently report and incidents. I would respond calmly and be consistent with all incidents. I would reassure pupils that the school takes bullying and violence very seriously and that we will do everything we can to protect and support them. In the long-term, I would increase awareness of bullying, perhaps in school assemblies or classroom discussions and also ensure that there is increased supervision of the children when outside of the classroom. For any children that have been bullied, I would offer to provide extra support or development programmes to help them feel more protected while at school.
