Describe how you might contribute to a lesson given to a group of seven year old children learning to play percussion instruments'
Before the lesson starts I would discuss with the class teacher
Which percussion instruments are the children using'
How many pupils are in the lesson'
Where will we be using the instruments'
Where are the instruments kept'
How would you like me to assist during the lesson'
After this has all been discussed I would then prepare the instruments. I would get them out make sure they were safe and clean for the children to use and in good condition. I would also research to make sure I new how to play the instruments and what they were all called so I could answer any questions.
During the lesson I would supervise the children and help them to use the instruments and encourage them to listen to the teacher. I would also support any children having difficulties and give them praise and lots of encouragement. I would also observe children’s behaviour and make sure they have a good understanding of the lesson so that I could give feedback to the teacher.
After the lesson I would check all the instruments making sure they are in good condition and put them away in the correct place.
What might your role be in organising, using and maintaining the learning resources, materials and equipment for this percussion lesson'
My role as a teaching assistant is to find out where the instruments are kept. To check the instruments make sure they are safe and clean to use before the lesson. Put the instruments out ready to use for the lesson. To make sure the children are using the instruments safely and correctly. At the end of lesson check the instruments again make sure they are clean and in good working order and then tidy them away in the correct place.
Describe how you act in class in order to be an effective role model for the standards of behaviour expected in pupils'
I would have a positive attitude and I would respect the children and listen to them. I would communicate well with the teacher making sure we have a clear and consistent approach. I would encourage and praise the children when necessary and I would be consistent with the way I address children’s behaviour.
What strategies might you employ to encourage pupils to behave appropriately' Describe how you might react to incidents of bullying and violence'
I would encourage pupils to behave appropriately by making sure they understand the school rules and why it is important to follow them. I would encourage pupils to pay attention and work together. I would support the children by listening to them and help them to follow instructions and I would praise and encourage them when necessary.
I would react calmly and consistently to any incidents of bullying and violence. Making sure the children understand bullying and violence is taken very seriously. I would make sure that pupils understand that they can report any incidents of bullying confidentially. I would deal with each incident individually and listen to each child separately making sure they feel safe and secure. I would ensure all incidents and recorded and dealt with as quickly as possible.
Describe how you might appropriately observe the physical abilities and skills of a nine year old boy'
Before the lesson starts I would plan how I am going to observe the child. I would discuss with the teacher what the purpose of the observation is and plan when to fit the observations in so I could focus on observing the pupil. I think the time sampling method would be the best way to observe the nine year old boy. I would record my observations on a note pad and write the date, time and observations. I would then write it up neatly later when I had more time. I would then give my feedback to the teacher I would make sure it was constructive, balanced and helpful. I would explain my observations and answer any questions. I would make sure any information that I had written down was kept in a secure place and remained confidential.
