Also it can be costly paying from your pockets because the health care insurance does not cover these procedures. As children move into the later teen years, they seek out ways to set apart themselves from their parents. While some parents may regard tattooing and body piercing as self disfigurement, young people see it as a sign of their uniqueness and emerging independence. (Sendblock, 2008, para. 1) Some see it as freedom of expression as in the first amendment and they believed that they should not have covered up or change to please anyone. For many adolescents, hair and clothing is as important to them as food and water. Whether it's tattooing, body piercing, or the latest look in clothing, teens express themselves through what they wear and how they look. And if we remember, so did us! Teens indulges in tattooing and piercing for the same reasons their parents might dye their hair, drive distinctive vehicles or otherwise attempt to create an image that is different from the groups. They do this just to fit in and to look cool. Aids can be easily transferred by dirty needles. If the needles are not cleaned between customers you could get HIV if someone before you was getting a tattoo and was HIV+. Always do your research on a parlor before choosing any particular one. (Hudson, 2009) One can also contract a disease or infection if he or she is pierced or tattooed under unsanitary conditions. It could also become infected if you do not follow the aftercare instructions. Also, if you are tattooed with a needle that is not sterile, you could transmit a disease such as hepatitis C. In addition it could take a long time for the body to heal from a piercing or tattooing and if it’s not healed properly it could leave scars on the body. With any type of body piercing there are risks involved. The best way to avoid complications is to have the practice performed by a knowledgeable and skilled piercer. (Rank, 2008, para. 4) Although on a national scale training requirements do not exist, those who are accredited or specialized know best how to properly complete the procedure, and of the anatomical dangers such as nerve damage that may occur due to inappropriate placement of jewelry. Tattoos and body piercing date back in history to more than 5,000 years. There are considered and began as cultural rituals. (University of Penn, 2008) some tribal tattoos were and are perceived as a sign of beauty. Others serve as class distinction, or to ward off illness and disease. Lip piercing and Labrets have significance for the people of Mali and Ethiopia because speech was believed to have developed by their ancestor spirit weaving piece of thread through her lip. For lot of tribes who pierced the septum of their warriors, it was merely sign of fierceness and courage. Despite the diversified reasons for piercing, all these cultures from around the world were incorporated in their belief that body piercing was form of art with highly vital, empowering, and positive connotations. (University of Penn, 2008) The Egyptian pharaohs had their navels pierced as a rite of passage into adulthood, and Roman soldiers pierced their nipples as a sign of maleness and courage. In Victorian times, members of royal families, both male and female, were known to have their genitals or nipples pierced. (Rank, 2008, para. 1) Current time-honored body piercing customs include adorning the nose, lips, and navel, and some Native Indians tribes use body piercing in religious ceremonies.(Rank, 2008, para.3) Not only limited to certain cultures, body piercing has become more common and widely accepted in the general population during the last part of the twentieth century. Men and women have various facial piercing and few are identified by over sized ear discs. Lip plates for women, help to gain social status and command higher bridal price. Prehistoric tribes thought that evil spirits would enter the body through the ear, because demons and spirits are supposed to be repelled by metal, ear-piercing prevents them from entering the body. Nose rings first appeared in India during the Moghul period around the 16th century. In fact, excavations in India have not turned up any evidence of nose rings in India prior to the 16th century. (Livermore, 2009, para. 2). Many Indian women, particularly Hindus, have their noses pierced around the age of 16, which is traditionally the marriageable age. Piercings in India, including nose piercings, are one way Hindus honor Parvathi, the goddess of marriage. (Livermore, 2009, Concl. para. 2). Finally I hope by reading the reason given; what is the purpose for having tattoos and body piercing, why is there so much peer pressure for our teens to fit in' By having tattoos and body piercing can lead to health problems and tattoos and body piercing are accepted in certain part of the world. Now you can see what the appeal of tattoos and body piercing is. Personally I am too scared of having a tattoos or even have any part of my body pierced, don’t get me wrong I have thought about getting a tattoo because it seems like it was the cool thing to do. In addition, always remember to be yourself doing do anything that you will regret in the long run.
