THEORY TASK 7
WORD COUNT - 582
SHEET 1 of 2
WHAT IS ASSESSMENT
“Assessment is a way of finding out if learning has taken. It enables you, the assessor, to ascertain if your learner has gained the required skills and knowledge needed at a given point towards a course or qualification.” Ref. Preparing to Teach 3rd Edition, Ann Gravells
WHY ASSESS
It’s a measurement of your learner’s skill and knowledge at that moment. Based on the information gained to decide:
* If learning has taken place;
* If progress is being made;
* If extra/ external help is required;
* If capable of passing course qualification;
* On what feedback to give;
INITIAL ASSESSMENT
Initial assessment will help you to identify:
* Needs;
* The right course;
* Education level (qualification);
* Computer literate;
* Literacy skills;
* Numeracy skills;
* Right entry level.
All of the above will help you evaluate your learner’s skills, knowledge, strengths and areas for development. Also if the learner is suitable for the course you are providing. If not, helping to point them in the right direction. This will also establish a baseline for you to work within the future.
Assessments are usually:
* Internal – by you or organisation;
* External – by independent assessor/examination board
TYPES OF ASSESSMENT I WOULD USE
* Observation;
* Questions (electronic and oral);
* Learning journal (consisting of work done);
* Assignments (projects to be completed).
Observation:
By watching the learners carry out a task on the computer.
By seeing if they have understood the task that has been set.
From demonstration that has been given.
From handout that has been given.
This will also allow the teacher to evaluate/modify the present/ and information given.

THEORY TASK 7
SHEET 2 of 2
Questions:
A straight forward question and answer session after all demonstrations. There will also be a multi-choice section on line (internet/learning channel) which will reflect the stage of the course (for example at the end of week 6, 10, 16 etc.) which will be time-based giving the answers at the end of each test. The learner will be given this for self-assessment and a record kept on-line and sent to the teacher by email automatically.
Learning Journal:
This will contain all the work the learner has carried out throughout the course, and being accessible by the teacher to assess the learner’s understanding of the whole process of modelling.
Assignments:
They will be small projects to be completed throughout the course at different stages to cover the areas worked on (over the past weeks). This will enable the teacher to see a physical model of the whole process enabling the teacher to give feedback and see if the learner requires help in areas of their work. There will be two assignments to cover the whole course set by the teacher or an external examination body, followed by an online exam set by the external body. This will lead to a qualification at the end of the course.
(Qualifications are a measure of intelligence at a given point in time).
TYPES OF RECORDS I WOULD KEEP
Tracking Sheet
* List of names;
* Attendance;
* Area covered in class;
* Date start/finish (work done);
* Standard achieved;
* On-line marks (from multi-choice)
This would give the teacher an overall view of all learners’ progress at any point throughout the course.
Individual record
* Who – name;
* What – course work/projects;
* When – date;
* Where – classroom/external;
* Why – progress (to monitor the stage of learning/development they are at);
* How – with the aid of a computer.
On-line
* Questions – multi-choice marks;
* What was assessed – extra work etc ;
* Time – (the learner could have used the internet/social networking);
* Individual plan – if required;
* Feedback given.
This will give the teacher an overall view of the individual, and a full picture of the stage of learning they are at. It will show the progress being made, also showing if the learner requires help in any specific area of the course.
