Preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector (PTLLS) T2 Legislation and Codes of Practice I deliver training to adults who work in the learning disability field. My specialised subject is dementia. Some of the relevant generic legislation related to teaching adults includes; The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974; this law imposes responsibilities on the teacher and organisation for the health, safety and welfare of the learners. The Disability Discrimination Act 2005 relates to provision of required adaptations to allow the student to fully participate. Legislation affecting my own practice includes; the Disability Equality Scheme 2010 as upheld by the Royal College of Nursing. Data Protection Act 1998; as a nurse I adhere to this act ensuring that the learner’s information is used appropriately. The Mental Capacity Act 2007 ensures that every effort is made to enable adults to make as many decisions as they can for themselves. In relation to codes of practice the Institute for Learning 2002 is an independent professional body for teachers, who strive for high standards in teaching and learning, promoting the progression of learners. The General Teaching Council for England, code of practice for teachers 2009, is based on eight principles that encourage learning, working with parents and commitment to equality. Codes of practice relating to my own work as a nurse; Nursing and Midwifery Council 2008 principles include respect and dignity in care, confidentiality, enabling, and maintaining professional boundaries. The International Code of Ethics for Nurses 2005 relates to ethical considerations shown toward people, practice profession and co-workers. Concerning organisational obligations, the 'Confidentiality’ NHS Code of Practice 2006 is a guide for those who work within or under contract to the NHS. It is based on legal requirements and best practice.
