Conclusion Introduction The objective of this guide is to help me remember what I have learned in “GEN 105 – Skills for Learning in an Info Age” and want to share with other students that are about to begin their studies with Axia University. This guide provides necessary information that will be used throughout the college years and that will help build and develop educational and career goals. Using Axia College’s Educational Resources Downloading files for use on my machine or portable device One of tools that Axia University provides its students is the use of their educational resources. These tools are very handy and useful to use throughout the college years to assist with school work and papers. Navigating the university Library The University Library provides thousands of articles found in their databases. Some of the databases available for use are: Thomson/Gale, EBSCOhost, Gale Power Search, and many others. Identifying key information within articles The information can be identified and access throughout these databases by utilizing key words, article publication date, database name, article title, article’s author, indication of peer review, and others. Upholding Academic Honesty Understanding Axia’s academic honesty policy As part of my education at Axia University is understanding how academic honesty policy applies to distance learning. In a distance learning environment the rules apply the same as if I was physically attending a classroom. Understanding consequences of plagiarism Plagiarism is defined as: “is presenting someone else’s ideas as your own”, “Whether accidental or intentional, plagiarism is a serious violation of the Student Code of Conduct and carries significant consequences”, “Submission of copied or purchased assignments is likely to be caught by Turnitin and the resulting sanctions under the Code of Conduct can include a failing course grade, suspension, or expulsion from the University. Avoiding plagiarism It is important to understand that whether is intentional or accidental the consequences for plagiarism are the same. Some tips on how to avoid plagiarism are, for example, present own original work with proper citation, if in doubt the university provides a Plagiarism checker which I recommend highly. Setting and Achieving Goals Identifying long- and short-term educational and career goals It is important to know what my career goals are and understanding that they are short and long term goals. I learned in class to identify two of my long career goals and break them into three short term goals so I could not be overwhelm. How to reach goals despite obstacles Something I learned in Axia University is that by knowing those long term goals and breaking them in smaller ones they are within reach. I learn also how to “prioritize” those goals to accomplish them. How an Axia degree relates to goals Goals have to be set in order to be able to achieve my degree. If I begin school and I am completely disorganized with no direction the chances to succeed are very slim. The professors and the tools that Axia University provides will assist me in accomplishing those goals. Managing Time Wisely Balancing time between courses at Axia One of the recommendations that I have learned during my time in Axia University was to create a schedule and write down everything I do throughout my day. Scheduling my time has helped me to use effectively to balance work, school, and day to day chores. In addition, I have to prioritize and eliminate “time-wasters” to concentrate and focus more. Fostering Reading Comprehension and Retention Using reading comprehension techniques for successful reading Part of my studies in Axia University was to learn techniques for “successful reading” and how to apply those techniques. As stated in one of the course materials “the goal of reading comprehension is complete understanding”. In addition some of the recommendations given were: • Think Positively – instead of stating that I understand, I have to tell myself that I will be able to do it. • Build Vocabulary – is never too late to learn new words and to enhance my reading capabilities. The more words I know the better I understand the material. Using SQ3R and other study habits I have learned that using the SQ3R guide has helped me tremendously to succeed in school. Please see below how the SQ3R’s could be applied in the learning setting. • Survey - How did I survey' • Question – What questions did I ask' • Read – How did I read' • Recite – What did I recite' • Review – How did I review' Other study habits learned in class were: • Choose the right setting – this will include selecting the right place for my studies, the right time during the day to study, and select the right company (if I choose to study alone or in a group). • Learn to concentrate – some ways to concentrate are: deal with internal distractions (for example: personal worries, hunger, pain), analyze environment to see if it helps or hurts my concentration, banish other thoughts and write them in a separate paper so I can deal with them in another time, and prioritize in my life (examples, invitations to social activities and learn how to separate study time from playtime). Applying Personality and Learning Styles One of the projects that I learned in class was to know what my personality and learning styles were and how to use them together. I have learned that there are multiple intelligences and multiple pathways to learning. Using my personality type for distance learning success By knowing my personality type “giver” it gives me an idea on how can I apply it in distance learning. For example, I could use my personality to teach materials to others, study with others, and seek out tasks, groups, and subjects that involve helping people. Developing my multiple intelligences By developing multiple intelligences it can open doors to majors, internships, and careers. Knowing my multiple intelligence of “Logical Mathematical” I can utilize it by intensifying those areas that I lacked. Some of the areas describe under a Logical Mathematical learning style are: enjoys math, individuals are attracted to logic and reasoning, and they are good at strategic games. Relating to others who have different personality types and intelligences By relating and knowing other personality types and intelligences within my class group I was able to understand more in depth the interaction with each other. The assignment helped me to be more understanding why sometimes I am seen as “insensitive” when answering questions and those answers were not friendly. Conclusion I have learned in “GEN 105 – Skills for Learning in an Info Age” how to apply comprehension techniques, how my multiple intelligences work together with my personality type, how I can manage my time wisely, and other areas of study to help me achieve my goals and to be able to receive a degree and advance in my career. REFERENCES Notes on “Understanding Consequences of Plagiarisms” were taken from Axia University Library; Grammar and Writing Guides: Plagiarism Overview. Notes on SQ3R’s were taken from Axia College Material, Appendix G from course GEN 105. Notes on the Essay format were taken from Appendix A and information was build up from each individual point.
