Unit 301
Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults.
Outcome 1
Understand the principles of developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults.
Case study
I have been working with Child A since he started school in reception.
When he arrived we were told he had Global Delay. He has since been diagnosed as having Autism and Verbal Dyspraxia.
His problems included;
Social relationships and interactions
Language and communication
Activities and Interests
Physical development
Here are just a few of the things we found he was unable to do,
answer the register
sit down properly on his own
put his hand up and ask a question
play with or along side other children
use the toilet
put his coat/shoes on
eat his lunch by himself
use the handryer in the toilet
Things we did to help him were;
show him how to play, explain what we were doing and let him do it in his own time
let him use a microphone when doing the register or circle time, so he could hear his voice more clearly
take him to the bathroom with the other children and sit him on the toilet with his nappy on at first
1-1 work with a T A.
work in a small group with other children
used visual aids
speech therapy
worked with mum to see what he likes/dislikes
let him have his comforter (watches or clocks)
show him how to use handryer by making it fun
He can now,
go to the toilet unaided
wash and dry hands using handdryer
play with other children in a group
ask for help from children and adults
play 1-1 with other children
put his hand up in circle time
can speak and be understood without the microphone
go up and get his lunch and eat it unaided
come in,take his coat off and sit on the carpet unaided
The efforts of teachers, family and various therapists has helped Child A get to where he is today. Effective communication has been a major part of his progress, whether modelling good behaviour or speaking to mum and colleagues.
1.1
Effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with children, young people and adults because it makes them feel comfortable in the setting and enables them to listen and learn.
1.2
The principles of relationship building with children, young people and adults are making sure that you are friendly and approachable, that they feel comfortable in your company and are able to come to you if they have any concerns or just want advice on something.
1.3
Different social, professional and cultural contexts may affect relationships and the way we communicate because somebody may have difficulties due to a disability or an impairment.
Different nationalities could be a problem too because of the language barrier. When the languages are different and translation is needed to communicate, the potential for misunderstandings increase. People from different cultural backgrounds could also find that they have not only a language barrier, but a difference in culture styles. The same words can mean different things to people from different cultures, even when they speak the same language.
Understand how to communicate with children, young people and adults.
2.1
The skills needed to communicate with young people and adults are making sure that everyone gets their chance to speak, put their own thoughts and ideas across and are fully understood. You may also;
Listen to what they have to say and look interested by giving them your attention.
Smile and be approachable, react in a positive way to what they have said.
Show an interest in what they are saying to let them know you have understood, question them to keep the conversation going.
2.2
To adapt communication with children and young people for the age of the child or young person ,you would have to be aware that younger children may need more guidance and maybe more physical contact when first starting school.
When in a learning environment, it is important that children can concentrate and that you can deal with any disruptions.
In a social environment ,like the playground, it is good to have a positive friendly relationship, by answering questions with a bit of fun ,whilst always keeping at an appropriate distance.
You should always be aware of children with any communication differences. Some children are very shy and struggle to engage in a conversation or even answer a question. Children may also have a speech impediment which could impede their communication with others, they should be allowed a little bit more time to say what they want. Some children may not have the chance to speak in their home environment and need encouragement and guidance to help them.
