Unit 8- support children and young people’s positive behaviour
Know the policies and procedures of the setting for promoting children and young peoples positive behaviour
When we are dealing with childrens behaviour, the staff must stick to the school policies at all times. Staff must know where the guidelines are at all times so if they don’t know them, they can look to them to refer them. They need to take health and safety, child protection and the bullying policies into the equation just in case they need to handle the child. The policies and procedures of the setting relevant to promoting positive behaviour cover the following : behaviour, cose of conduct, rewards and sanctions, dealing with conflict and inappropriate behaviour, anti bullying and attendance.
The schools behaviour policy is important as it acts as guidelines to the staff and how to manage the childrens behaviour. It must be shown all throughout school at all times. There may be serious consequences if not applied.
Code of conduct is essential in schools. They are shown to pupils on how to behave properly in school, this shows they will have a clearer understanding of the rules throughout the school. They need to be aware of the boundaries and how to manage them, so no hitting, keep hands and feet to themselves. Schools will have different consequences, so sent out of class, reported to headteacher, miss break and lunchtime. Children must understand what each rule means, the staff may say what they mean to them in the childrens language so they understand. Pupils may be repeated of the rules if they misbehave, and then they will be given their punishment. It is important that staff recognise bad behaviour, otherwise the pupils may keep misbehaving or do worse things, so its important that you eliminate it early. Staff may praise pupils, this may result in more behaving in schools.
Rewards and sanctions is always suitable if the pupils are being good and following rules and codes, so you may get pencils, rubbers etc. Or the pupils may get a commendation for their hard work. Rewards may result in better behaviour in schools because the children want they reward that they are offered. Sanctions are something that the children will try to avoid, so if they misbehave then they might get time out or name on the board, miss break or lunchtime, sent to deputy or head teacher or even reported to parents.
Dealing with conflict and inappropriate behaviour is part of the codes and conduct. The children need to know the behaviour policy otherwise they will misbehave, the staff to make sure that the children know the rules and enforce them to prevent inappropriate behaviour. You need to make sure that staff are aware of inappropriate behaviour and what needs to be done to reduce it.
Anti-bullying is part of the behaviour policy and should set out procedures to reduce it and deal with it. Bullying can be in different forms, the schools and staff will try and stop it ASAP before it harms a child. Cyber bullying can be involved through schools, through computers, phones etc, signs of bullying include bruises, cuts, nervousness, if you see the signs, tell your manager.
Attendance is included as schools will have to deal with it, it may be worrying if a child is away for so long because it will affect their schoolwork, the receptionist will keep an eye on the childrens attendance to see if there is a pattern is occurring. Some schools award pupils with 100% attendance.
Describe the importance of all staff consistently and fairly applying boundaries and rules for children and young peoples behaviour
All staff in schools need to apply the rules consistently, and they need to be controlling on the behaviour of the children. If they don’t apply them then the students may keep doing it and it may increase. They must be shown the boundaries and what they cant do it them and what you can do it them. The pupils may be shown the rewards and the sanctions for them, so they may be given school equipment and the sanctions may be time out or break time loss. Different strategies may be introduced to eliminate bad behaviour so they know what to do for next time if it doesn’t happen again. If the child gets praised, they might behave again but this may take some time.
Be able to support positive behaviour
Describe the benefits of encouraging and rewarding positive behaviour
It is important for all pupils that positive behaviour is rewarded and recognised. They are role models to other students in the schools. You sometimes concentrate more on the misbehaving children because you are keeping an eye on them , but don’t drift into more detail with them because you are trying to spot as well, the well behaved kids, as you need to reward them. So use this as an example and show the kids what they could be getting. It is important to recognise both behaviour groups in the schools, on the misbehaving children, they may be given punishments like break time loss, time out etc. But don’t forget that there are some well behaved students so don’t forget them, because they are trying hard and want the rewards. Some children may be attention seeking to get rewards, try to ignore it where possible.
Describe the sorts of behaviour problems that should be reffered to others and to whom these should be referred
You may have to deal behaviour problems which are difficult to manage. You may find if you are working in a school, if you feel confident and comfortable you may want to tackle to incident yourself. Some situations you may need another staff member, if a pupil is in danger or if others are in danger, dealing with a difficult situation by yourself or it maybe that an instruction that the pupil isn’t following. Depending on the situation, you may have to refer it to a senior or higher authority level of staff, so you might contact a supervisor as they are the first point of behaviour support and plan different situations and strategies in classrooms. Other teachers may offer advice to you, so what to do etc. Head teacher and deputy head because you could speak to them if you have any concerns about a child.
Or it could be outside of school, so a behaviour unit is run by local authority, so they can give suggestions and support. They may even come into schools and observe child behaviour. Or educational psychologists, so they support pupils and adults and work with them. They offer help in any way shape or form to everyone who need help and advice.
