Unit 6.1
Summarise the policies and procedures of your setting with regards to promoting children and young people’s positive behaviour.
Behaviour policy
The school behaviour policy is designed to support the way in which all members of the school can live and work together in a supportive way. Although our school has a number rules, our policy is not mainly concerned with rule enforcement. It is about encouraging good relationships, so that people can work together with the mutual purpose of helping everyone to learn.
The school approach to behaviour management aims to ensure that every teacher, including NQT’s and supply teachers, every TA, every child and every parent is fully aware of the acceptable standards of behaviour, positive rewards, possible sanctions for disregarding the established code of conduct, and possible strategies for supporting those who may need help in achieving the standards set.
Code of Conduct
The underpinning ethos of the school’s approach to behaviour management is through Restorative Practices and the promotion of Key Core Values. These values have been agreed with staff, pupils and parents and permeate throughout the schools ethos and through all areas of the curriculum. The values in our school are Respect, Friendship, Kindness, Honesty and Responsibility. These may change over time to reflect the cohorts of pupils.
Rewards and Sanctions
Our aim is to catch children being good and to reward appropriate behaviour. In this way we are concentrating on good role models in order to highlight good behaviour.
Informal and formal rewards are organised at two levels – individual level e.g.; verbal praise, letter home to parents and golden time are to name a few and class level e.g.; jigsaw sheet pieces to be coloured in when the whole class shows good behaviour, conduct, attendance and so on
The school uses a number of sanctions designed to support the school rules, and to ensure a safe and positive learning environment. We employ each sanction appropriately to each individual situation.
The orders of these sanctions are,
Ignoring - Verbal Warnings - 2 Minute Time Out - Temporary isolation within the classroom - Temporary exclusion from the classroom - Informing Parents – Detention –Referrals - Loss of participation in a school event/activity - External Seclusion – Exclusion.
Dealing with conflict and inappropriate behaviour
All incidents of inappropriate behaviour and the actions taken are recorded on the class behaviour log, which is checked weekly by the behavioural support team. When regular offenders are identified referrals are made to the Emotional Well-Being and Behavioural Support TA’s for support and monitoring. Any classroom behaviour regarded as particularly serious should be dealt with immediately and reported to the Headteacher/SLT. These would include; Assault of another child or adult, Fighting in the classroom, Serious verbal abuse, Theft and Severe disruption in the class room. Such incidents would be investigated straightaway and would lead to the instant removal of the disruptive child by the Headteacher/SLT or behaviour support team member. The child would either be sent to work with another teacher or the parents would be contacted.
Anti-bullying
Bullying is wrong and damages individual children. We therefore do all we can to prevent it, by developing a school ethos in which bullying is regarded as unacceptable. We try, as a school to produce a safe and secure environment where all can learn without concern. The policy aims to create a consistent school response to any bullying incidents that may occur. We intend to make all those connected with the school aware of our opposition to bullying and we make clear each person’s responsibilities with regard to the eradication of bullying in our school.
Attendance
It is important that children go to school as much as possible so they can get a full education that is suitable for their age and ability. Children also learn to socialise at school, make new friends, learn new things, join clubs and play sports. When young people don't go to school regularly, they find their friendship groups change and it is difficult to settle in properly - even if they miss school for a few days. Our school offers rewards or certificates to children who attend
What to do if your child is too ill or can't go to school
We ask parents and carers to contact the school as soon as they know the child won't be going to school.
Taking children on holiday during term time
We encourage parents and carers not to take their children out of school during term time. But if you feel this is unavoidable you should ask permission from the head teacher in advance - they might authorise up to 10 days holiday. You should always be aware of when SATs and other exams are scheduled so you can avoid taking them out of school at these important times.
We also have late gate patrol where our parent liaison worker and our behavioural support worker monitor the gates so we can help those who are constantly late or struggling with children who don’t want to come to school, this is done once a month and is not announced.
I believe that the above policies and procedures have a positive effect on pupil and teacher morale, they help raise the standards of achievement in the school, are vital in the personal and social development of all pupils. It helps pupil’s develop self-discipline and understand what is expected of them. The policies also show that we try to provide an environment where everyone feels happy, safe and secure and which allows children to become positive, responsible and increasingly independent members of the school community.
It is important that all staff adhere to rules and boundaries consistently and fairly in accordance with our policies, if this is not done then it can confuse a child e.g.; getting a verbal warning for disrupting one class but in another class the child does the same and does not get a verbal warning. All staff must show positive behaviour as the children learn from watching us too.
