For my journal entry of a subordinate group, I plan on giving you a little information on Italian Americas. Italian Americans had started to migrate to America from 1876 to 1924 throughout those years a total of 4.5 million came over from 1901 to 1910 2 million people had came over to this country. As I have been doing a little research on Italian Americans, I had learned that my family had migrated to this country back in 1880 with Great Grandmother Margaret Pascocello, when they had migrated over here they decided to reside in Manhattan for 30 years before moving to Staten Island, New York. The trip from Italy to America had taken 36 days Margaret had taken the trip with one of her daughters that ended up passing a way a day after they made the trip to America. One of Margaret’s biggest memories over the years before passing away at103 years of age was attending the opening Brooklyn Bridge in 1883 and reminding a relative about 50 years later that she had paid for his appendicitis operation. To this day a lot of my family members reside in Staten Island, with a lot of the family members residing in Northern New Jersey. This side of the my family comes from my Dad heritage and family background, my Mother is also Italian America as well but we still haven’t been able to discover when that side of my family had migrated to United States America, but my mother’s family had also resided in Staten Island and the Northern part of New Jersey. The information that had given about my family history is from one of my Uncles that is now 101 years old and in which was his biggest remembers of My Great Grand Mother Margaret. There is also a newspaper interview with Margaret denying that she was in her 100’s for her age I have not been too successful on getting the whole article because of no one in the family remembering what newspaper the article was written for, still trying to find out so I can get full article to show my daughters and give them a little piece of my family history. Italian explores and sailors ventured outward in hope to discover other nations touched America in its earliest beginnings. The most famous was Christopher Columbus a Genoese mariner sailing for Spain. There were other seafarers like John Cabot (Giovanni Caboto), Giovanni da Verrazzano, and Amerigo Vespucci. Some important missionaries like Eusebio Chino and Fra Marco da NIzza also played roles in exploration and settlement of different areas. Shortly after the America Revolution small flow of northern Italian skilled artisans, painters, sculptors, musicians, and dancers would come to the new nation that started filling the economic niches. With the fail of the early nineteenth century liberal revolutions this immigrants were join by a few political refugees with the most famous one being Giuseppe Garibald. In the second half of the century American cities included different Italian street entertainers, trade workers, statuette makers, and stone workers who head established the first beachheads for the settlement for the migrates to come. This Italian movement dispersed widely throughout America but the numbers were too small to constitute as a significant presence. In 1850 the heaviest concentration of Italian migrates was in Louisiana with about 915 people, in results of Sicilian migrates to New Orleans. Within the decade California contained the highest number of Italian immigrates than any other state a total of 2,805 people and New York to become the home to millions of Italian immigrants. With the little bit of the information I have learned about my family and the migrations of the Italians to America I plan on doing a little more research on all of it to discover new information that I didn’t know. I hope by giving a little background about my family coming to America and the other information I had given would give you a little more information on Italian Americans in America. I am proud to have the heritage that I have of being an Italian American , I lived here in America for majority of my life but I also lived in Italy for three years so That I can get better understanding of Italian culture and be more aware of what my culture is like, so that I can teach my siblings and my daughters more of the Italian cultures.
