My Student Survival Guide
University of Phoenix
July 25, 2011
My Student Survival Guide
I have developed a Student Survival Guide throughout my nine weeks in a Skills For Learning college class. These six elements will help me through the rest of my time in college as I work towards completing my degree.
I have learned that I can use the Axia Educational Resources to look up information for a paper by using the Library. I can also use the Center for Writing Excellence when writing papers. The Center for Writing Excellence has multiple resources to use like the Reference and Citation Generator, which helps me to make sure that I am citing a source correctly. There is also a Plagiarism Checker allows me to submit a paper to make sure that I have not plagiarized any information. Another source that is a great source and help to me is the APA Information.
I will Uphold Academic Honesty by making sure that I stay true to myself and to the university. I will follow the rules provided in the Student Handbook. I will cite my sources correctly when using other information or thoughts that are not mine so that I am not plagiarizing and using someone else’s work as my own. Plagiarism consist of copy and pasting someone else’s work and turning it in as your own, and even citing a source the wrong way can be considered plagiarism. Plagiarism is not accepted by the university and could result in running my chances of completing my degree. I plan to uphold academic honesty by not plagiarizing my work.
Setting and Achieving Goals is a great skill that I have learned during my nine weeks of this class and I will be able to use it as I continue to work towards earning my degree. Setting short-term goals will help me to stay on track as I am working to earn my degree. Earning my Associates degree at the University of Phoenix is my long-term goal. I have learned that setting short-term goals and achieving them is the best way for me to earn my long-term goal of earning my Associates degree in Business. This skill will be a great tool for me to use throughout my other classes and even in my everyday life.
Another great asset to my Student Survival Guide is Managing Time Wisely. I have learned during the nine weeks of this course that it is very important for me to make sure that I manage my time so that I do not fall behind in my class work. I have noticed that time can run away from you when juggling family and college. Understanding how to manage my time has helped me throughout the nine weeks of the course and it will continue to help me in my following courses. The syllabus has been beneficial for me because I am able to see what is required of me each week. I printed out my syllabus and I made sure that I went over it each day. I would check off and highlight each assignment as I completed it. As I would write my to-do-list each morning, I would look over my syllabus and I would write my assignments on my to-do-list so that I could keep on task. Keeping with my schedule has also helped me to fight procrastination. I know if I stay on time with my schedule then I will not procrastinate when it comes to completing assignments.
Another important asset to my Student Survival Guide is Fostering Reading Comprehension and Retention. Throughout this course, I have learned that some of the text I will be reading during my other courses will require extra work and concentration. I know that I need to have an active approach and an open mind when it comes to reading and comprehending what I read. I have learned that I need to ask myself questions and define unclear concepts in order for me to retain the information from the text. The SQ3R has shown me many techniques that I can use when reading text for my future courses. I have learned the value of skimming which allows me to get a brief feel of the information in the text. I also know how important scanning can be especially during my review time. Highlighting notes in the text also helps me during my review time. I am able to stay on track with where I am in the text and I will be able to refer back to the information, as I need it. The SQ3R has helped me realize that prioritizing my reading assignments will be beneficial to me when trying to figure out if the reading material is important enough to study more in depth. It has also helped me to understand that I will need to pick the correct setting when I am reading in order for me to understand the course materials. It has also helped me to realize that I need to minimize the distractions, which will also be beneficial for me to retain and comprehend the materials I am reading.
Applying Personality and Learning Styles to my courses will allow me to break out of my box. Now that I know my strengths and weaknesses, I know what areas I need to work on and develop better for my future courses. I know that I am a person that has to have organization in college and in my day-to-day. It helps me when the instructor explains assignments step-by-step. I also know that my intelligence is intrapersonal which helps me to understand why I learn things the way I do. I know that my personality is very shy and so I tend not to like doing group projects. I rather work in a quiet setting where I can organize the information I need to complete the task. Knowing this information about my learning style will help me to build up the skill areas that do not come easy to me.
As I continue in my future courses, these six elements will help me to understand my text materials and my assignments.
