Randi Orris English 090 Cause and Effect Essay April 14, 2011 Student Violence School violence, well it doesn’t start there that is where it ends up. It all starts between the students. Public schools experiencing violent incidents increased from 71 to 81 percent in a five year period. It involves the teen culture the norms and what is going on around them. There are many different places where things can occur but family environment, community environment and school size are the three examples I am going to use. Student violence is a result of the teen culture and environment surrounding the children and young adolescents. Family environment is a large factor in how kids and adolescents grow up. For example with the current economy it demands parents to work more which means one parent is raising the children and more single parents and teen mothers, which makes these kids liable to parent neglect or physical, sexual, and substance abuse. While the parents are trying to raise their kids right and give them a good future. They are not nurturing and reinforcing positive behavior, when parents fail to do so children develop negative-and often violent behavior matters. As you can see family environment is a key factor but community environment is also a good deal of it. Community environments have some options for kids but with limiting budgets some key things are getting cut. If the communities are not responsive to the needs of families and their children can develop teens to be out and develop gangs and trouble. When after school and summer programs are not available what are kids supposed to do. Juvenile-justice statistics show that lack of supervision, youth violence rises above average rates between three and seven p.m. with the constant shifting of demographics often reflects larger upheavals as communities undergo changes it size, economic, wellbeing, and racial and ethnic mix. Therefore that is why community environment is involved with student violence. No matter what the school size there can be student violence. Researchers at the national center for education statistics found that discipline problems are often related to enrollment sizes. Therefore larger schools tend to yield more discipline problems rather than small schools. Students at schools with 1,000 or more students were more likely to disrespect there teachers where as smaller schools are less likely. School size is just a small factor in student violence. Whether it is two kids fighting, disrespecting their elders, stealing items from a store t lunch it is all wrong. It is called school violence when in all reality it is student violence. It just ends up at the school. Regardless of family and community dependence on schools to educate, shelter, and discipline their children, most schools have difficulty playing multiple roles as educators, surrogate parents, social service, or law-enforcement agencies. The culture teens are raised in where they learn there habits and their actions upon which they act.
