Dracco Oliver ENGLISH 0190 – INTRODUCTION TO COMPOSITION WRITING PROJECT #2 – ANALYZING MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES “EXPERIENCE COLUMBUS STATE – CAMPUS RESOURCES” What is the main purpose of the student advising center and how important is it to the Columbus state community college students. The student academic advising center was my choice of campus resource, I had little idea to what really goes on in the there. My thought must say it is to “be there for the student”. In turn, this means forming a relationship with the student, meeting them where they are in their life, listening to them, and not just showing them what classes to take. Therefore I decided to interview a couple of student to find out if they have used the service and why they think it is important and then I interviewed a student academic adviser about the service and what really goes on in there compiled. I went to the Aquinas hall, room 116 and talked to Sherri Harrington a student adviser, she was very pleasant and helpful. She told me the purpose of the student advising is to do more than just see that the student graduates, it means to ensure that the student is ready for their career—and life beyond the college campus to server as a link between students and the college by answering general questions about student education, helping student in their planning, help them in their progress and also help with difficulties faced during their time spent at the college. what student advising does is to be an access for students to find out departmental goals for students, identification, development and implementing of suitable educational plan.While it is true that some students just want an advisor to ensure that they take the correct classes; others (a great many others), would like someone that is able to coach them through the challenging times and congratulate them on their achievements. An important part of her philosophy of academic advisement lies within the realm of communication. ''I want to know my students'', ''to help them solve challenges before they become larger problems and to assist them with finding resources that they need to live a more fulfilling life''. Why must student value this resources, first and foremost it will help student self reflect on knowledge and understanding of personal values, achievements ,motivational goals and awareness of their goal process .secondly it helps in information seeking and strategies based on students knowledge and understanding of higher education rations such as the Degree audit reports (DARS) and the Ohio transfer module which is very essential especially for student who aspire to transfer to a a four year college. And finally it helps in the decision making in educational planning using the self reflecting, motivational and information seeking strategies. I later went on to interview a work colleague Francis Tony who happens to be a past student of Columbus state who is currently at Ohio state about what he think of the student advising center. He expressed deep regret about how he wasted a year studying courses that did not even transfer into Ohio state. He got everything on track after he talked to a student advisers they helped him and showed him the pathway to take, he was surprised to complete his degree earlier than he thought and his transition went on very smoothly with no issues. My friend Samuel Aikings thought it was not very important because he was taking the mechanical engineering technician program which had all the course outlined clearly. So he did not need a course adviser all he did was follow the outline and he successfully graduated. After my finding I came to realize how important the student advising resource is especially for someone like me who will be transferring into a four year college. I think the student advising is a little bit hiding it would be better if it was the first thing you see if you enter into the college somewhere in Madison hall, because I think it is a resource every college student should take advantage of to me it is one of the most important resource center on campus.
