Imagine being born into a political dynasty. Imagine the expectations that come with being the son of a senator. Imagine growing up surrounded by some of the greatest political minds of the 20th century. Now imagine surpassing all of those expectations. Today I have the pleasure to introduce you all to one of the most influential people of the 21st century. Albert Gore was able to overcome his father’s shadow and make a name for himself. I will be talking about how Gore’s involvement in politics and environmental activism made him a household name. Early Years I’d like to start off by providing some background information on Gore Albert Arnold Gore Jr. was born on March 31, 1948 in Washington D.C. His father Albert Gore Sr. served in the House and the Senate for nearly three decades. His mother Pauline Gore was one of the first women to graduate from Vanderbilt University (law school). Education Gore graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor’s degree in government. Studied at Vanderbilt Law School from 1974-1976 Family He married Mary “Tipper” Aitcheson on May 19,1970 but the New York Times reported that they separated after 40 years of marriage. He is the father of three daughters and a son Politics Gore first entered politics in 1976 when he was elected into the U.S. House of Representatives His first presidential campaign was in 1988 at the age of 39. Story about why he didn’t run for President in 1992. Vice President from 1992-2000 Gore famously ran for President against George W. Bush but he lost despite winning the popular vote. “No matter how hard the loss, defeat might serve as well as victory to shake the soul and let the glory out.” Environmental Involvement During his time as a politician Gore stood out for his interest in the preservation of the environment for future and current generations. Among elected officials Gore’s environmental record is unparalleled. While serving as Vice-President he chaired the U.S. Senate Delegation to the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. Around the same time he wrote Earth In the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit, which outlines an international plan of action to confront the global environmental crisis. His philosophy regarding the environment is, “We must make the rescue of the environment the central organizing principle for civilization.” In 2006 Gore was involved in a documentary film titled An Inconvenient Truth. The documentary was designed to educate citizens about global warming. “Fear is the most powerful enemy of reason.” Significant Accomplishments Politics U.S. Senator, Congressman, and U.S. Vice-President Environment Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for his environmental work Media Primetime Emmy Award Webby Award Academy Award for Best Documentary Grammy award Created Current TV, a cable network Runner up person of the year for Time Magazine (2007) Conclusion Through his involvement in politics and his environmental work Al Gore has become one of the most recognizable figures in the world.
