Good morning Mr. Elasfros and class mates. As you all know we were given a speech to about the novel “Looking for Alibrandi” written by Melina Marchetta.   Looking for Alibrandi is about a journey to which we travel every day. It shows us the importance of knowing who we are and who our family is. Some of the issues throughout the book are much like the ones we face on a regular basis such as depression, love, hate, expectation, admiration and betrayal. Josephine Alibrandi is a seventeen-year-old ethnic girl.   Josie is coping with the problems of adolescence, not only does she go through the typical teenager problems, but has also difficulties because of her cultural background.   The author, Melina Marchetta demonstrates the concept of change not only through the main character Josephine, but also through the other characters such as Michael Andretti, Christina and Nonna. Before Josephine ever meets her father, she felt that he abandoned her mother while she was pregnant. Josephine perspective all changes after meeting her father Michael Andretti. She gets the impression that he is intelligent and a decent man, but she doesn’t’ say anything. Another change is when Michael first discovers that Josephine is his daughter he says, “I do not want to see her. I do not want a complication in my life.” He is very negative and does not want to have anything to do with Josephine. However though throughout the novel, Michael and Josie begin to bond together and enjoy each other’s company. Michael faces a change in his perspective on fatherhood. These issues help us shape our understanding through the concept of change.   Looking for Alibrandi looks at Cultural differences in Australia.  Josie comes from an Italian background which makes it difficult for her to do things due to her families’ interference. There are some issues due to her family and social pressures, suicide. However, Josie stands between two cultures, neither really accepted by the Italians nor by the Australians. The Italians approach her of being an illegitimate child. The Australians call her an "Ethnic" or a "Wog". Therefore she feels that she does not belong.
