Solar Panel Instillation (I3) Sarah Martin RES 342 September 29, 2010 Stephen Loro Solar Panel Instillation (I3) Background: You are the owner and CEO of Martin Solar. Your company installs solar panel systems on residential and business structures. Your competitor is Solar Power. For some reason they are receiving more business than you are. You want to come up with ways to increase your profits without raising your prices. Research Problem: Martin Solar is losing profits to Solar Power when installing kilowatt systems on residential and business structures. Research Question: Is there a difference between Martin Solar and Solar Power as measured by kilowatt instillation' Research Purpose: The purpose of this study is to inform management if there is a difference in the kilowatt installation of Martin Solar compared to Solar Power. Hypothesis: Ho: The data will show there is no difference between my company and your company as measured by kilowatt instillation. H1: The data will show there is a difference between my company and your company as measured by kilowatt instillation. Significance: The alpha level of significance is 0.05. Data Collection: The data for this research study was provided in class on September 22, 2010. The sales between companies will be measured by kilowatt instillation. | | Martin Solar | Solar Power | 1 | | 17 | 7 | 2 | | 10 | 9 | 3 | | 15 | 12 | 4 | | 11 | 13 | 5 | | 12 | 4 | 6 | | 8 | 8 | 7 | | 6 | 18 | 8 | | 3 | 15 | 9 | | 20 | 20 | 10 | | 12 | 19 | 11 | | 19 | 3 | 12 | | 13 | 17 | 13 | | 11 | 4 | 14 | | 4 | 6 | 15 | | 11 | 14 | 16 | | 9 | 20 | 17 | | 15 | 12 | 18 | | 7 | 12 | Statistical Methods: Descriptive Statistics:   | Martin Solar | Solar Power | count | 18 | 18 | mean | 11.28 | 11.83 | sample variance | 22.68 | 32.15 | sample standard deviation | 4.76 | 5.67 | minimum | 3 | 3 | maximum | 20 | 20 | range | 17 | 17 | | | | standard error of the mean | 1.12 | 1.34 | | | | confidence interval 95.% lower | 8.91 | 9.01 | confidence interval 95.% upper | 13.65 | 14.65 | half-width | 2.37 | 2.82 | | | | skewness | 0.12 | -0.06 | kurtosis | -0.42 | -1.23 | coefficient of variation (CV) | 42.23% | 47.91% | | | | normal curve GOF | | | p-value | .6412 | .2787 | chi-square(df=2) | 0.89 | 2.56 | E | 3.60 | 3.60 | O(-0.84) | 4 | 5 | O(-0.25) | 3 | 2 | O(+0.25) | 5 | 4 | O(+0.84) | 3 | 2 | O(inf.) | 3 | 5 | The mean kilowatt instillation of Martin Solar is 11.28 and the mean kilowatt instillation of Solar Power is 11.83. The Goodness of Fit test revealed that the data was normal. The researchers retained the null hypothesis because the p-value indicated a normal distribution. Runs Plot: Hypothesis Test – Independent Groups (Z-test) | | | | | Martin Solar | Solar Power | | | 11.28 | 11.83 | mean | | 4.76 | 5.67 | std. dev. | | 18 | 18 | n | | | | | | | -0.556 | difference (Martin Solar - Solar Power) | | | 1.745 | standard error of difference | | | 0 | hypothesized difference | | | | | | | -0.32 | z | | | .7502 | p-value (two-tailed) | Possible Differences: The p-value indicates to retain the null at an alpha level of 0.05. The data indicates there is no difference between the kilowatt instillations between Martin Solar and Solar Power. Conclusion: During a class held on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, Dr. Stephen Loro provided data on kilowatt instillations. The measurement for the data is in kilowatts of energy per system. The test included two batches of 18, on from Martin Solar and one from Solar Power. The researchers compared the data with MegaStat using Descriptive Statistics and Hypothesis Test, Compare Two Independent Groups, Z-test. The researchers retained the null hypothesis of both tests using the alpha level of 0.05. The data showed that there was no difference between Martin Solar and Solar Power.
