In the Greek city of Athens, every citizen was important to the city. As a philosopher, Socrates believed that he does not know anything. It is because of this that the Oracle said he was wise. So Socrates travel to different parts of Greek, and to question the suppose “wise’ men if they really knew the answers of life. The youth laid their eyes on Socrates since he possessed a different way of thinking and living. His unique method of questioning and insulting brings him to court for corrupting the youth. He is willing to die for his belief and is sentence to death by the people of Athens. In the Apology, he portrayed himself as a gadfly buzzing and annoying a sleepy horse. He sees himself noble and helping the city not to fall into a deep sleep. It is through this that Socrates did not give up philosophy.
For Socrates, as he is portrayed in the early dialogues by Plato, he “does Philosophy” by going out into the world and talking with people. For him, Socrates wants to talk to suppose “wise” men and to show that they really do not know anything. As the Oracle said about Socrates, he is the wisest men in the world. In the Apology, Socrates believed that and said he is wise because he does not know anything. It was his mission to travel around and asking questions that will questioned the wise religious people. In doing so, he did not write anything down; he was simply too busy try to prove people were wrong about their beliefs. His students recorded his work and his arguments. Plato helped Socrates by putting his thoughts on paper. As “doing Philosophy,” Socrates commitment is shown even when facing death at his trail. He believed that the people who sentence him to death are unjust and by dying they will commit to an unjust action. He knows that he would be better off dead since the people did not want to acknowledge their own mistakes of reasoning.
The most general Philosophy topic that Socrates was interested was Ethics. What were the foundations of moral judgment' And how can a human being live a “good life'” Those questions worried Socrates; how can a person fulfill their purpose in life' Surely Socrates wanted people to believe that they really do not know anything and therefore to begin or to start over a new but true life. As in the Euthyphro, Socrates talked about holiness and evil. He questioned whether holiness is holiness or if the gods make it holiness. This in return made Euthyphro disgusted and cannot provide any more facts to prove it. His method is what made Euthyphro disgusted by him. Socrates has always been asking questions to prove that one contradicts the other. It was this contradiction about holiness that made Euthyphro disgusted. His method insulted the supposed “wise” men and therefore hated him. Once ignorant wise men are shut down from Socrates, what else can they do to prove themselves' In the Apology, his method was not so great when he was talking to Meletus. Socrates did seem to try to lead Meletus to the truth, instead it seemed as if he was mocking and just being ignorant answering his questions quickly. Socrates believed that it would do no good if her were to take Meletus seriously and it would just concede too much.
Socrates ideas of philosophy are based upon about human being and their purpose. Socrates believed that every person should fulfill their lives. He believed that if no one can fulfill their lives, then it is no point to living for a lie. He believed that people should come to their self knowledge and it is then that they can have a “good life.” A good life is about fulfilling their knowledge and to become wise. Socrates said that he does not want the city of Athens to fall into a deep l sleep and that he wants the people not to be lazy and to think. He pictures himself as being a gadfly annoying a sleepy horse, which he wished to make the horse stand on its feet. The human nature is to know what is right and what is wrong, to be wise for the future, and through this one has to gain knowledge. In which, this gaining knowledge also struggled Socrates; how can oneself can gain knowledge and when' In the Crito, he states that a person should obey the contract of the Laws of Athens. He metaphorically said that the Laws of Athens and the citizens are like parent and children. If a child breaks the law, it is like he is disrespecting his parents. If a person wants to live a “good life” then one has to obey the laws.
Socrates, as a Greek Philosopher, mentioned that politics are for no philosopher. He believed that once a philosopher enters politics then they can be easily torn and killed. If one thinks different than others, one is putting themselves to death. Socrates wanted to be an individual roaming around the cities. The politic life was no meant for him, he did not want to get all mixed up and thrown around. He simply wanted to bring issues up by one person at a time. In my opinion, a philosopher like Socrates would probably put himself more in danger if he were to be put in politics. Politics is a waste of time, and Socrates wanted answers so he talked to the people directly. Socrates also believed that if a person who enters politics, that person would have to get along with others and either have to try or force themselves agree with one another; which he did not want to lie to himself for the sake of others.
Socrates did not give up on philosophy. He pursued as if it was his destiny to show the people if they really know what they are talking about. He wanted to live a fulfill life and in order to that he would have to acknowledge that he does not know anything; therefore, separating the ignorant “wise” men that believe they know everything. Despite not knowing the answers to his questioning, he was a least not ignorant to believe something without reasoning. He believed that human can become wise and to know the ideal knowledge of life, that’s what he wanted the people to ponder about.
