The social web has changed over the years. Social web is a set of social relations that link people through the World Wide Web. It encompasses how websites and software are designed and developed in order to support and foster social interactions. The social web was dated from the 1960s, and was one of the first social applications to connect multiple individuals through a network, enabling social interaction by allowing users to send message to one or more people. Social web can be used for online interactions such as shopping, education, gaming, and social networking websites. Throughout this paper I will discuss social webbing today and tomorrow’s technologies and their positive and negative impact on society. The internet is a vast worldwide collection of computer networks that links smaller networks. The essential ingredient that makes the Internet revolutionary is that people enter into it each day, and they leave a footprint of knowledge and of themselves as they travel through the web. Pg.363-364.The internet had its beginnings as the ARPnet during the 1960s, when the Cold War threat was at its peak. ARPA, the United States Defense Departments Advanced Research Projects Agency, was focused on the nation’s computer security. The ARPA networked was designed as a way to link computers at laboratories across the country for the purposes of sharing computing recourses (Hafner & Lyon). Today the ARPAnet has disappeared, officially becoming extinct in 1989 when it was replaced by the Internet, which has become a massive public and private web connecting millions of people together and supplying them with limitless amount of information. The internet is a connection of computer networks that link to each other all over the world. The main way the Internet is accessed is through an application called the browser. The browser, a free program is the gateway to everything you might want to do online. In the beginning there were no graphical browsers for the Internet at all. The connection speeds were simply too slow, and as a result, everything was simply text. Before the 1990s, people used the Internet in variety of ways. First, they sent emails, but these were all text based, along with emoticons for expressing emotions. The final main use of the internet before the browser was a tool called Gopher, an aid that navigated computer files to try to find what a user was looking for. There are many browsers being used, the first was Mosiac, which was developed as the National Center for Super-computing Applications (NCSA). After Mosaic was dropped, Netscape Navigator became the next browser. Netscape biggest competitor was a browser called the Internet Explorer. The Internet Explorer was so significant because it was developed by Microsoft. Microsoft had virtual control of the desktop with its Windows operating system; its browser had a leg up on all its competitors. Next came Firefox in 2004 by Mozilla, in 2003 Apple came out with Safari, and the latest browser is Chrome by Google. The internet can be used for several of reasons such as; social networking, online banking, cyber bullying, bill payments, schooling, reconnecting with family and friend, and to work. Social networking is basically today’s internet. There are networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, Bebo, Friendster, Meet up, and Twitter. MySpace application hit the social web in 2003. MySpace was one of the original social web applications to begin this genre. MySpace is a place where you can create a profile page that you can use to meet new friends. MySpace has a lot to offer than that though. MySpace pros are big network, multimedia, advanced editing, keeping in touch. MySpace cons are editor mishaps, anyone can contact you, options are hard to find. MySpace, troubled social media web site, was brought by the news corporation in 2005 for $580 million and was sold six years later to the advertising targeting firm specific media for roughly $35 million. MySpace was one of the largest sites to find friends and meet new people before Facebook came along. Using Facebook can be very difficult if using it for the first time. It is an entirely new communication environment. MySpace and Friendster were originally defining this genre of Web applications. While they still are very much active today and competitors, Facebook has now surpassed them to become the leading social website. So let me tell you what facebook is. Facebook originate in 2004. This application allows you to blog, establish private networks, share photos, locate former classmates and establish friendship. Facebook can have some negative effect to the real world. Something’s should remain at a certain discreet. Facebook has broken up many marriages, relationship, and friendship However; many have lost their jobs behind facebook. Unacceptable behavior on facebook can have real life consequences. For example, there have been many cases of colleges rejecting a student’s application, and jobs based upon inappropriate posting on facebook. Although there are some privacy settings, as a general rule it is good to remember that if you post something on facebook, there are secrets. Remember to post wisely and discreetly, but most of all, have fun. They are also negative effect to the social web such as cyber bulling. Cyber bulling has become very popular now a day. Cyber bulling is a form of teen violence that can do lasting harm to young teens. Many different statistics have shown that cyber bulling is a serious problem among adolescents and teens. Many people need to be aware of cyber bulling; teens and adults can help to fight it. Cyber bulling has affected many teens and adolescents on a daily basis. Cyber bulling can be used by technology, like cell phone, and the internet, to bully or harass another person. Cyber bulling have been known to take many different forms: sending mean messages or threats to a person’s email account or cell phone. One can spread rumors online, or through text for example Janie sent a mean text to Susan because she didn’t like Susan. Janie then post nasty comments on Susan facebook page. Cyber bulling can be very damaging to teens and adolescents. Cyber bullying can take many forms, so it is important to know what to look for: * Posting hurting or threatening messages on social networking sites or web pages. * Taking unflattering pictures and spreading them through cell phone or the Internet. * Stealing a person’s account information to break into their account and send damaging messages. The main point of this paper was to inform you about the social web. This is showing us that the social web can have positive and negative impact on us. The social web has been shown to be used for online interactions such as shopping, education, gaming, and social networking websites. When we made friends we use to ask for each other phone numbers. Now a day when we make new friends we do not ask, “what’s your number'’ Or “What’s your email id'” Instead we ask, “What’s your facebook name'” Or “what’s your Twitter name’' Such is an impact of these sites on our lives. The way we speak, the way we interact and the way we think is changing. Words such as scrapping, blogging, teasers-which a few years back wouldn’t have made any sense to anybody; but today it’s being used with so much spontaneity. As a matter of fact, Google even has links to site, which gives the world’s most popular acronyms. It is amusing but that is the way it is. However, these sites fulfill a very basic criterion of humans. It is that of communication. People living in extreme corners of the world are seen to be getting married; friends from far-off places are able to keep in touch with each other’s and lovers from two parts of the world stay connected with each other’s emotional needs. These help us make new friends, stay in touch with the old ones and let us know more about the persons we care about, their likes, dislikes, interests, and emotions.
