Social Development The article I chose to write about is, Adulthood and Aging: Social Process and Development. This article talks about when people get older they have fewer social partners. It also has information about the socioemotional selectivity theory which states that the decrease older people have in social partners is caused by a developmental process that begins in early adulthood. This article also talks about the different research studies that have been done on men and women in different countries to find the age related preference for close social partners, as opposed to acquaintances. This article also gives us information on how having close social partners provide emotionally meaningful interaction and satisfaction with family members increase with age. It also talks about how having social connections are important to a person’s emotional well-being and can reduce the rates of depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbances. I also learned in this article that having social relationships can decrease the risks of such diseases such as hypertension, faster recovery from illness, and lower chances of relapse. If I had to write a research paper on this topic, I would have mixed feelings on using this article. This is a really good article, but I don’t feel like it went into detail about social development in adulthood. I feel that it should have gone into more detail about this topic. I would use this article because it gave great information on how older people socialized with others and it provided me with some research studies. I also liked how it gave us examples on how having good social relationships could help us and reduce the risk of certain diseases. I would also use the information about which relationships were the most healthiest when people get older. Overall this was a good article and I would use some of the information if I were writing a research paper.
