They say God works in mysterious and complex ways, in ways in which mankind does not have the brain capacity to comprehend his very strategies and methods. But some social groups choose to repent this very matter, and believe that God is not meant to be understood, just worshiped. The novels; The Colour Purple, Purple Hibiscus aim to discuss this, they try to exploit the roots of true worship within communities. The Color Purple approaches this theme in a very abstract context and attempts to twist the boundaries of religious beliefs that are integrated within a society’s customs, Alice Walker targets members of the society in an exploitive stereotypical context, she does this by commenting on their actions in a negative way, a sort of social satire , that are pure examples of how God has influenced the individual, in this instance, Fonso a typical Black Man, causes the problems towards his family and community : “You gonna do what your mother, wont do”, he abuses his children, causing many mental problems to occur within Celie. There are also several problems which occur in Purple Hibiscus, when Jaja missed communion it disrupted many things: “Jaja, you didn’t go to communion today”, this causes Papa, to fling a missile across the room and crash in to the figurines which was a mental symbol of cleanliness for the mother to clean, and also inspired hope. It was a way of her expressing her hope from God.
The realisation and the acknowledgement of God is seen as a big part of socialisation and learning to connect with spiritual things. In the Color Purple, Celie fails to emancipate herself from the family in which she is forced to call home: “You better get used to it, I never get used to it”, but she believes than she can escape to another world with God, and end oppression from her patrichal family. This is in contrast to Kambili (Purple Hibiscus) who peruses equality through the obedience of her father: “it didn’t matter, because I knew that when the tea burned my tongue, it burned Papa’s love into me”. She believes that God is many things, and the tea is a symbol of God, assisting her in achieving love from her Dad. Kambili unlike Celie believed that her father is the key to ending her oppression and that through obedience, respect is gained., In both instances we see both Kambili and Celie being forced into submission from both of their fathers, but this is kind of abuse is approached differently, but Kambili is deceived into believing that her abuse is the only way to connect to love whereas Celie is blatantly being enforced to do something which goes against her will, that has no relevance to love. In terms of God and Religion, Kambili isn’t a strong believer of God or religion and that affects her individual role in the novel has not being seen has important by her father, this is kind of the opposite with Celie who feels that Fonso is only obsessed with material gain and not God/love in this case affecting both of the individuals.
Many characters within the novel are oppressed by religion, whether it’s by choice or they are enforced by others, they still submissive to God and its faith. It’s said that religion & God should only be expressed through love and appreciation, however the individual will not fulfil the experience of loving God, if it simply a chore. This lifestyle is made more vivid with Purple Hibiscus, has the importance of free expression is tested within family roles, Eugene is an exact example of disciplined ideology: "You cannot stop receiving the body of our lord. You know that." The father refuses any sort of excuse that is negative towards Christianity, he simply cant see any other religious views, and believes that his religion is the conventional and practical way to live life, One is able to see that God doesn't just influence the individuals actions, it also impacts how different households are run. The Colour Purple discusses Religious hardship in a more subtle approach, we are shown Celie almost fearful of Gods presence:"Dear God.. I am I have always been a Good girl", from her crossing out the line of "I am", this indicates that she wants to be completely honest with God, in order for her to reminisce of her sins, It also illustrates that she has grown tired of the way she is being treated, and is no longer
