The Signs and Symptoms of a Human Earthquake In my lifetime I was gripped with five grand mal seizures. Growing up as a child diagnosed with epilepsy, I know from personal experience what happens during these seizures. I had my first seizure when I was in the first grade, I was on the school bus when it hit. I woke up in a hospital not knowing what had happened and why there was wire all over my head. “Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain where nerve cells misfire. This can cause strange sensation, emotion or convulsions, muscle spasms (ticks) and loss or consciousness.” (MayoClinic.com) I had what you call “grand mal or a tonic- clonic seizure features a loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions. It's the type of seizure most people picture when they think about seizures in general”. (MayoClinic.com) Definition: “Grand mal seizure is caused by abnormal electrical activity throughout the brain. In some cases, this type of seizure is triggered by other health problems, such as extremely low blood sugar or a stroke. However, most of the time grand mal seizure is caused by epilepsy. Many people who have a grand mal seizure will never have another one. However in some people, daily anti-seizure medications are needed to control grand mal seizure.” (MayoClinic.com) Symptoms: “Fatigue: Sleepiness is common after a grand mal seizure”. (MayoClinic.com) Each one of these body exhausting episodes caused me to sleep for at least 10 to 14 hours before awaking. I remember feeling when waking up that I was coming back from somewhere far away. “Aura: Some people experience a warning feeling (aura) before a grand mal seizure. This warning varies from person to person, but may include feeling a sense of unexplained dread, a strange smell or a feeling of numbness.” (MayoClinic.com) “Unresponsiveness after convulsions: Unconsciousness may persist for several minutes after the convulsion has ended”. (MayoClinic.com) The short time of my seizures was usually less than a minute, but overcoming what had just happened to my body, my mind was confused and lost like a child straying from a parent in a crowded mall. “Confusion: A period of disorientation often follows a grand mal seizure. This is referred to as postictal confusion”. (MayoClinic.com) Seizures wiped the mind clean of anything and everything I had done or thought that entire day. As if it didn’t happen or have time to process the day’s events and file away in memory. I have known many people that had grand mal seizure and some of them would be so confused that they didn’t know their own name. each time I would have one the doctors would ask what I thought was the strangest question like “what your name'” or “Do you know what day it is'” a doctor that I had never met asked me if I knew who he was, I look at him funny and said why should I you are a complete stranger to me. He laughed and said that was the best answer he ever got to that question. I thought to be unfair because I was thinking I should. “Loss of bowel and bladder control: This may happen during or following a seizure.” (MayoClinic.com) “A scream: Some people may cry out at the beginning of a seizure because the muscles around the vocal cords seize, forcing air out”. (MayoClinic.com) During the seizure, I have no recollection of any words, screams, or other actions. My body’s involuntary actions took over and my memory wiped clean all details of what was happening. “Severe headache: Headaches are common but not universal after grand mal seizures.” (MayoClinic.com) As my physical and emotional body healed in a deep sleep I was unaware of any headaches or other pains caused by a seizure. Causes: “Exactly what causes the changes to occur remains unknown in about half of the cases. However, grand mal seizures are sometimes caused by underlying health problems, such as: Genetic syndromes” (MayoClinic.com) I was adopted so my parents wondered if it was a genetic. Because my own children have experienced seizures, I believe that there may be a link to genetics and seizures.  “A family history of seizure disorders I was five when I was diagnosed and was not exposed to the drug and alcohol inducing factors. Tests: With my children each having experienced at least one such seizure, I believe there is a link with genetics. Time and future generations will be able to further explain the mysteries as to why some brains are more susceptible to seizures and others are not. I hope a pray that whatever cause these seizure in my family will not affect many more generations. References MayoClinic.com. Grand mal seizure. 23 June 2009. 25 February 2010 .
