4.4 Create a piece of work which evidences critical writing, communicating different points of view. 3.2 Use reading to support own learning. 3.3 Use one other method of research to support own learning. The American Gun Law This essay will highlight a two-tier approach. It will illustrate reasons supporting the American gun law which will be reinforced by an article extracted from PJ media. Secondly it will portray reasons that are against the American gun law which are extracted from an article from guardian. Finally I will be concluding my opinion and the reasons for it. My first article is extracted from PJ media; it illustrates the American gun law in a positive light. In the article it conveys that Ryan, the victim, managed to save his life because he had the possession of a gun. This promotes that a gun can be used as a defence, especially in such remotely dangerous areas of America. As well as as numerous citizens of America are in favour of this law, it shows that possession of a gun as a self-defence item is favourable to innocent individuals of the public because they can be protected whilst being around in such areas of society. In the article, Ryan says he has possessions of rifles as home defence; this is undoubtedly to protect himself and his loved ones. This shows that the possessions of guns being owned aren’t always for negative intentions. Even if the gun law had changed to being possibly illegal, people wouldn’t stop doing harm to other members of society, making it harmful area to live in and it also may even lead to an increase in injury and deaths. Ryan also states – ‘‘If someone is unfortunate enough to be in a self-defence situation with three or four attackers, the difference between ten rounds and thirteen (or twenty) could mean the difference between life and death.’’ The quotation coming from a victim who has in reality experienced this shock must be considered and observed with great analysis as it delivers the importance of having the possession and not. The innocent deaths occurring, much like the one represented in article one, victims like Ryan wouldn’t be able to have a defence if it wasn’t for the gun law. The possession of a gun saved Ryan’s life and could save many other lives too with the help of the American gun law. However, people with the possession of a gun could also have bad intentions and lead to innocent deaths which are frequently taking place, one which is exemplified in the shooting of Hadiya Pendleton’s case. Hadiya Pendleton is the victim associated with my second article which portrays the American gun law in a negative light. This is because Hadiya was an innocent 15 year old teenager who was mistakenly targeted and shot which had triggered the result of her death. The increase of shootings in America has led to panic, gang members are constantly ‘inaccurately’ targeting innocent victims and this is defining the point that the American gun law needs to be stricter or completely change. In contrast with the previously discussed article from PJ media, I have now strongly interpreted that most possessions of guns are of gang members who are the cause of numerous innocent deaths are misusing the law and right given to American citizens of having a possession of a gun. From this article, I think many citizens are misinterpreting the American gun law and so courts should highlight the mistakes of criminals who have been convicted previously for misusing the guns. Moreover, and update of the law could be essential to clear out any misunderstanding of the law in order to reduce these shootings. Police can take more action so victims can be safe. In this article, an important aspect mentioned was- “In 2012 Chicago's homicide rate topped 500 for the first time since 2008, stoking residents' concerns about gun violence and leading the police department to put more officers on the street and to focus more on combating gangs” – this put in light reflects the inconsistency of the law which conveys the message of the American gun law being either enforced or turned illegal as many are concerned about their welfare and currently the rate in just one particular area is high. It’s vital for American gun law to be reconsidered in contrast to just one areas statistic. Overall I think it depends on the circumstance, possessions of guns should only really be necessary in situations of needing self-defence or hunting but laws should be enforced as it will decrease the rates of crime. However due to the increased shootings, many similar to Hadiya Pendleton’s, it shows that either way, the possessions of a gun can be seriously harmful to any citizen and for that reason, my opinion suggests that the gun law should become stricter or even make it illegal because it’s only increasing the innocent deaths of many children and adults who have no link to gang members whatsoever. If the American gun law becomes stricter, for example, the only possession of a gun is inside the house to use in emergency situations; it would possibly reduce the inaccurate shootings on streets and make it safer for young teenagers like Hadiya to walk around safely. Despite the fact that the victim, Ryan, life was saved due to having possession of a gun, if It becomes illegal, many people would certainly back off from the concept of having a gun, moreover the consequences of having a gun must become stricter in order to reduce this in general and to convince gang member’s that they could be jeopardizing their future and people around them. In article one it portrays the possession of a gun being beneficial to innocent people however in article two it portrays the possession of a gun being harmful to innocent people this has led to my opinion promoting the possession of a gun should be simply illegal and people who decide to go against this should face serious consequences in order to teach others, and them a lesson, however it should be acceptable only for hunting or self-defence and so it should still be legally permissible. 4.5 Create an accurate bibliography and reference list for a piece of writing Reference List * Hsieh, P.
