September 18, 2010 Should America Maintain / Increase the Level of Legal Immigration Is Immigration keeping this country alive or killing it slowly' Immigration in the United States has been a very long difficult and controversial problem. The U.S population fed largely by immigration, will grow to 420 million by the year 2050 (according to the U.S Censes). The quest of millions of people would be to live the American dream. Most of those millions are those who immigrate from all over the globe into the United States. Unsatisfied immigrants leave there countries hoping to take there skills to America. Many immigrants lived in there countries for so long that they learned a variety of trade skills. America has a lot more opportunities for these immigrants to make their lives and the lives of there families better. Many countries in the world have very limited opportunities to create a good life. America is far the best country in the world and it can only get better. Diversity increases and expands in America. There is no other country in this world that has the diversity and culture that we do in America. Having all the different races, cultures, music, and food brings all different kinds of people together. Bringing a variety of different people together brings new ideas into communities. Having the variety of different people together teaches one another about different ways of life, religions, cultures, and languages. Immigrants take the low paying jobs that most Americans do not want to do. Immigrants would rather come into America and work for wages ranging from $5-7 dollars an hour. These people would be lucky enough to make $7 a day in there countries. Most Americans prefer not to work these jobs such as busing tables, house cleaning, and picking up trash. The Americans would rather take the non labor, more high paying jobs. Immigrants will work hard at these jobs to make sure its done right and take pride in there hard work as well. This help keeps America moving by fulfilling low wage jobs. It improves the picture of the United States. Immigrants that come into America can get a better understanding on how America really is. Most people in other countries only see what is going on in America by what the media tells them on TV or the radio. Media can definitely take the negative side with a lot of issues and can make the United States look bad. If America was more welcoming in letting immigrants come into our country then they could go back to there families and friends and tell them what America is really like. This will help out the people feel the life of what it means to have rights, such as, freedom to worship, and freedom of speech along with the rest of the amendments in our constitution. Poor immigrants take up a lot of government programs. The American government offers health care, welfare, education, and etc. The immigrants are not making a great deal of money when they come into our country illegally so they are taking away a lot of these programs away from the hard working legal citizens. Since the illegal immigrants are getting paid very low wages and getting paid under the table this will most likely continue this way, unless they start to get an education and work toward something higher in life. Without them on some kind of legal payroll they are being exempt from paying taxes. Most of the illegal immigrants are getting paid less then 30k a year and depending on how many deductions they have they could be qualified for the low income and child tax credit. These credits then will get them money at the end of the year. Government resources are very limited in this economy today, so now that the illegals are getting the resources, it decreases the amount of resources for the legal citizens that are in need of them. Having more immigrants entering the country illegally brings more terrorists and criminals. Many more people entering into our country illegally could bring more drug dealers and criminals. If these people are starting off getting into this country illegally then bringing the illegal activity with them will not be a problem for them. Most illegal drugs come from other countries, they are brought into the country from the illegal immigrants. “ Enforcement by the US Department of Homeland Security has gone way up” ( Filisko ). With having more illegals and drugs then that means the government needs to hire more police to patrol areas where theres high crime rate. Having to hire more government officials to watch out for illegals and drugs that means it is more money that will have to come out of the tax payers pockets. Bringing in drugs to America helps immigrants build a bigger enterprise for themselves, once they get money from these drugs they then send the illegal money back over to there countries where most of there families are living to help them live a better live. Once they are in our country then they have the opportunity to cause havoc. Americas identity is losing its national language. Immigrants use to adapt to Americas main language which is English. Now schools and workplaces are requesting everyone to start learning the “second” language of spanish. Workplaces and schools are pushing more toward “multi culturism”. Having pushing more toward the multi culturism then it motivates the immigrants to keeping there own cultures around rather then adapting to the American culture. Fake documents cause major problems in America. Since the immigrants are coming into our country illegally they are going to need documentation that they are “real” citizens. What they will do is steal peoples identities including name, address, date of birth, and social security numbers. “ It’s nothing no one wants to, buy forged papers or even use a coyote” (Hancock). This is a huge problem because if they do go out and do some illegal activity it will get traced back to the real person with that information. Since there is so many illegal immigrants in America it is hard to find the actual person that committed the crime. Also if they have fake identities they are able to get loans, bank accounts, and real estate properties. Having false documentation causes major problems in todays society. America first started off with immigrants now its a very controversial talk all over the United States. America has been having a problem with overcrowding for many years. All the immigrants are just trying to live the American dream but at the same time they are taking it away from the well deserved legal immigrants. At the end of the day everyone is just trying to make a better life for themselves.
